The first love is always the strongest, so they say. Jim Harbaugh, a former player and the prevailing HC of the Michigan Wolverines, seems quite happy at his current place in Michigan. And anyone in their right mind would feel the same if they were in his shoes. Imagine coaching an NFL team, coming back to your roots, and leading your alma mater football team to three back-to-back CFP appearances!

The hot speculation about Jim Harbaugh’s potential return to the NFL continues to raise interest. A recent Twitter post revealed a likely possibility that Michigan’s HC will remain with the Wolverines. Harbaugh told his seniors as they were leaving the stage during the 2023 Michigan football award show, “I just wanna say, I hope some of you are coming back next year.” 

And there’s more. Michigan honored their head coach as offensive lineman Zak Zinter presented a Winged Helmet signed by the whole team. Jim Harbaugh has made a statement in Michigan and the Wolverines fans are hoping these gestures could mean he’ll remain in college football. 

Michigan needs Jim Harbaugh as HC

If Jim Harbaugh leaves Michigan for the NFL, the Wolverines might have initial trouble adjusting to someone who’s replacing their HC after nine seasons. Michigan has proposed a five-year agreement for Harbaugh’s extension that would ultimately pay him $11M per year. But it remains unclear whether the HC will continue to thrive in the college football scene or take another leap in the NFL.

The 59-year-old had expressed his desire in the past to join the NFL to finish what he had begun. During his time as the San Francisco 49ers HC, Harbaugh led his team to a Super Bowl appearance, losing to the Baltimore Ravens. However, with the upcoming CFP games in January, Jim Harbaugh isn’t in a position to drop his decision now.

The Michigan Wolverines finished the season with a pristine 13-0 record. Now they will fight against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Rose Bowl in the hope of clinching the national championship title. In his nine seasons as Michigan HC, Jim Harbaugh’s record is 84-25. His presence or absence could make a drastic impact on the Big Ten champion.
