McCarthy, concluding his tenure as Michigan’s starting quarterback with an impressive 27-1 record, faced his sole defeat against TCU in the previous season’s Fiesta Bowl. As a junior, he showcased remarkable skills, completing 72.3% of his passes for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns, with only four interceptions. Coach Jim Harbaugh lauded McCarthy as the best college quarterback in Michigan’s history. In McCarthy’s announcement post on social media, the young quarterback shared words of gratitude to his family, coach Harbaugh, and the fans, stating, “I have said it before, the University of Michigan is the greatest University in the world.” He continued to appreciate everyone for their support, “Every time I walked out of the tunnel to see over 100k in Maize & Blue, I have felt the love and support from all of you.”

Notably, McCarthy led a crucial fourth-quarter drive in the Rose Bowl, forcing overtime, and steered Michigan to victory against Washington in the College Football Playoff championship. Reflecting on the journey, McCarthy emphasized the unique urgency and determination within the team that fueled their success.
