Deion Sanders fell short of recognition as College Football News (CFN) announced their finalists for CFN Coach of the Year. If the Colorado Buffaloes finished the regular season with the same spirit they started the game with, Coach Prime could have found himself on the list of the Top 15 college football head coaches. But for now, he has to take the back seat while the privileged few fight for the prestigious title.
Coach Prime was one of the promising candidates to secure a spot on the list of the best college football head coaches. But his success period was short lived as they exit the season with a disappointing record of 4-8. However, the same can’t be said for head coaches like Kirby Smart and Kirk Ferentz who not only made it to the list, but also have important Championship games coming up.

On Tuesday, CFN listed the top 15 contenders for the CFN Coach of the Year. Unsurprisingly, Coach Prime wasn’t eligible with just four wins following their final loss to Utah 23-17 after six losing streaks. But as far as stats are concerned, he falls behind the top college football head coaches who are assessed based on who gave the most effort, who set historical marks, and who fared best through the season’s ups and downs.
One of the lucky head coaches is Kirk Ferentz who serves as the head coach of the 10-2 Iowa Hawkeyes. Raising Iowa’s offense from death since his arrival in 1999, Ferentz is regarded as the all-time wins leader at Iowa. He is leading his team to the Big Ten Championship game this season against the 12-0 Michigan Wolverines.

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart is another CFN Coach of the Year finalist credited with leading his team to an undefeated record. Georgia leads the SEC East with 12-0 to face their division rival, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama ranks 1st in the SEC West with 11-1 and will face Smart’s Bulldogs in the SEC Championship game on December 3.

While Coach Prime Deion Sanders didn’t clinch this lucrative spot, we can’t argue that Deion Sanders improved Colorado in more than just one aspect. Under his coaching, the Buffs rebounded from their 1-11 record in 2022 and became one of the most-watched programs, even selling out the entire season games for the first time.
