Does Deion Sanders' reaction to his ex-player's departure reveal his true character as a coach?

No bridges burned! Among several players leaving the Colorado Buffaloes this offseason, one of the most buzzed-about transfers was the player that Deion Sanders coached when he was just 5 or 6. While speculations are high as it was during the Buffs transfer exodus, the story just might not be what you think it is.

RB Dylan Edwards joined Deion Sanders to test it out in the real field when he committed and played in the 2023 season. He recorded 76 carries for 321 yards as well as 36 catches for 299 yards but unexpectedly, he entered the portal to join the Kansas State Wildcats in 2024, the program where his original commitment lies. Since that episode, this is the first time he’s coming out publicly to talk about Colorado and Deion Sanders is as supportive as ever.

Coach Prime’s outlook toward RB Dylan Edwards never wavered even though he left him for the Wildcats. He reposted an X post on the young star’s interview where he talked about Coach Prime and Colorado. Respect and admiration ooze from his caption, “Great young man, great family. He will successful wherever he goes, we want him happy. That’s the difference maker. I’m happy if he’s happy. It’s bigger than football man.”

Dylan Edwards appeared live in an interview for the first time on Cats Talk by Wildcat NIL on July 12 after leaving Colorado. His voice shook with emotion as he fondly recounted his childhood under Deion Sanders’ mentorship. This is what he said of leaving the Buffs, “I was very homesick. My confidence level got built in Colorado” but ultimately, it comes down to the place where one’s true happiness lies. And Kansas State has always been home to the Derby native.

K-State HC Chris Klieman couldn’t be more excited for the team he’s building this offseason. With Edwards’ return, he joins childhood friend and former youth football teammate Avery Johnson who is the team’s freshman QB. Familiarity can go a long way in building chemistry on and off the field.

What’s your perspective on:

Does Deion Sanders' reaction to his ex-player's departure reveal his true character as a coach?

Have an interesting take?

As Klieman said during the Big 12 Media Day, “It’s a speed/homerun threat that we maybe lacked last year, whether that’s on the offensive side or in the return game. I think [Edwards] can do all that and we’ve gotta find creative ways… We’ve just got to find ways to get him the ball.” Edwards is already a loaded talent. Perhaps, being in his happy place can trigger that potential for greatness.
