The Colorado Buffs team is like a mini Sanders family. Deion Sanders’ eldest son Deion Jr. works behind the scenes of the team, Shedeur Sanders plays the quarterback, and Shilo Sanders plays the safety in the team. Because of this Coach Prime has often been criticized for nepotism. Playing both coach and father is very demanding, he always strived to maintain professionalism on the field. With the boys growing up now, they will have to move to the NFL, but Sanders won’t be leaving the Colorado football program to coach them. However, he was sure that Shedeur would be the No. 2 pick in the 2024 draft.

In a recent press conference, Coach Prime was asked, “Sir has it started to set in for you that this could be your last year coaching your kids?” With a smile, he said, “Yeah, it’s been set some time ago. I mean I’m a real dad which means that we have a tremendous relationship, which means we communicate often daily. And we can’t wait to take our sons vacation this weekend when spring break commences. So I can’t wait to so we can talk about other things in life that our plans and our preparations. ”

Despite being the head coach for his sons, he maintained a healthy father-son relationship on and off the field. “I think Shedeur only played four games without me, that’s it, in his entire life,” he said, referring to a period when he had a leg injury. Sanders also jokingly mentioned his other son, Shilo, and said, “Shilo says every time I mention Shedeur, to make sure I mention him. He’s in the first round as well… He told me to make sure.”

Earlier this month Deion Sanders revealed to Chris Matthews, NBA shooting trainer, that the 2024 season would be very emotional for him as it will be the last time he will be coaching his kids. He said, “Every game is going to be about passion and love. This is going to be the last time I coach my sons.”

Coach Prime was sure, not to leave the Colorado Buffs for the sake of his sons. He had admitted to this on the ‘RG3 and The Ones’ podcast. “I’m not talking about one of the kids, I’m talking about both of the kids….No, that’s not in our plan. We’ve always had a plan and we’ve executed the plan 100%.”

Deion Sanders, the two-time Super Bowl champion, has taken on one of the most intriguing jobs in college football — coaching his sons, Shilo and Shedeur, for the Buffs. His tenure began with a bang with three straight wins, including a positive 36-14 victory over Nebraska.  Adding another layer to it, both Shilo and Shedeur were key players in those victories.

Shilo Sanders, following in his father’s defensive footsteps, plays safety. He recently played a major role in the Buffs’ win against TCU with a flurry of tackles. Meanwhile, Shedeur, the team’s star quarterback, has always had his role intertwined with his father’s coaching decisions. Both sons started at the FCS level with Jackson State before transferring to Colorado alongside Deion.

He has even revealed using “tough love,” to set clear boundaries, he made them call him “Coach” on the field. Despite these, Sanders’ loyalty to his sons is quite firm. He was always there to protect Shedeur from controversies while maintaining his composure as head coach. He believed that Shedeur would have gone to the 2024 NFL draft. Coach Prime said, “He wouldn’t have been the 1st quarterback off the board. I think he had the ability. But, he probably would have been the 2nd quarterback off the board.”
