Alabama Crimson Tide had a lot to figure out after Nick Saban retired. They hired a new coach, Kalen DeBoer, pretty quickly. But even the team itself looks much different now, especially on defense. A bunch of players left, including some with experience like Trey Amos and Kristian Story. Also, some younger talents like Dezz Ricks, Earl Little Jr., and Antonio Kite decided to transfer.
Most recently, big-name players Kadyn Proctor and Caleb Downs also left. Despite that, a freshman defensive back from the 2023 season decided to stay. He never played much, but he believes in the team’s future and is still dedicated to being a part of it.

Nick Saban‘s retirement caused a lot of players to leave the team, including important players on defense and even the quarterback. However, cornerback Jahlil Hurley decided to stay, even with so many teammates leaving. When asked the reason behind it, the young defensive back had a simple answer — “I’m a Bama kid, of course.” He wasn’t alone in his decision. Players like DeVonta Smith, Malachi Moore, and Jalen Milroe made the same choice. “They could have left, they had every right to, but they didn’t. So, why would I leave?” he reasoned.

With his decision, Hurley becomes one of the most experienced players in Alabama’s DB room for the upcoming season, right behind Malachi Moore and DeVonta Smith. While teams like the Raiders are hungry for cornerbacks in the draft, Hurley’s Alabama pride won out. He could have pursued potentially better professional offers but chose to remain. This means Alabama now has a strong defensive backfield with Hurley’s leadership and a group of new faces ready to make their own impact.

Post-Nick Saban tide is for young talents
Along with new head coach DeBoer, Alabama poached offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack to the team. The Tide isn’t just gaining coaches – they’re also seeing a lot of players leave, making room for new talent to shine. This creates a unique situation for the team. With only Malachi Moore as a seasoned veteran, and a handful of backups like Devonta Smith, Bray Hubbard, Jahlil Hurley, and Tony Mitchell, the defense is hungry for new faces.

Luckily, the 2024 recruiting class brought in six promising freshman defensive backs. Plus, even transfers like Domani Jackson (USC) and Keon Sabb (Michigan) are still getting their bearings in Tuscaloosa. This leaves plenty of starting positions up for grabs, giving newcomers a real shot at making a quick impact. Meanwhile, experienced players like Hurley have the chance to step up as leaders, guiding the fresh talent. This sense of opportunity and leadership might be exactly why Hurley chose to stay with the Tide instead of chasing a professional offer. What are your thoughts on this?
