Deion Sanders is the only beacon of hope that his team needs. Coach Prime’s battle against his recurring blood clots is no secret, but something that he takes great pride in. While the Buffs were chasing victory, Coach Prime was chasing normalcy after his surgeries.

Despite the odds, Coach Prime was up and standing at the Folsom Stadium each day. Thrice a day, Lauren Askevold, the assistant athletic trainer at Colorado, helped him with a therapeutic massage on the sidelines, as he monitored the plays. Askevold hails Coach Prime, saying, “I haven’t seen much of a weak prime.” This is exactly the amount of dedication Sanders expects from his team, as he shares his struggle to teach them the meaning of being ‘tough’ after they witness the horrific injury of Travis Hunter.

Episode 4 of season 2 from ‘Coach Prime’ on Amazon Prime portrays the goosebump-inducing speech Sanders made after Hunter’s injury, one that had each player at a loss for words. “I could say never in my life I had to be taken off the field. Never in my life would I give training step a dash to become a get me off a dirt field,” asserted Deion Sanders in front of the Buffs.

The intention was to make the Buffs players come to terms with how dangerous football injuries can be, the prime example being WR Hunter’s hospitalization. The speech was not just to mention his struggles to inspire them. The opposite, rather. Coach Prime was doing his job as a coach, of uplifting the team’s spirits after their pivotal player, Travis Hunter, got injured. The WR sustained a hard hit during Colorado’s overtime victory over Colorado State on Sept. 16. Hunter was back on track for the game against Stanford, taking roughly a month to heal after medication and hospitalization. Healing is something Coach Prime is well aware of, given his medical history.

Deion Sanders proves why he is ‘Coach Prime’

After more than 10 surgeries, his toe almost getting amputated, and multiple clot removals, Coach Prime stands tall to discipline his team. The reference to his statement was from a playoff game against Carolina where Sanders poked his eye socket and lost his vision until surgery. It was not for the dizzy-hearted ones.

Yet, he stayed through each game with the Buffs throughout the season, even if he had to get hospitalized in between games for more surgeries. A true epitome of a good coach.
