Deion Sanders, the coach for the Colorado Buffaloes, hasn’t had the best season in his debut year as a coach. The 56-year-old NFL Hall of Famer was expected to wow the league with a phenomenal performance, but it didn’t exactly go his way. With the persona of Coach Prime, he managed to pull a decent record, but his team can certainly kiss the championship goodbye.

The Colorado team was expected to have a miraculous season this year. They were termed as the underdogs and, with the addition of Coach Prime to the squad, became one of the fan favorites in the league. But after a 3-0 winning streak, it seems like everything went wrong for the star-studded team. I have followed the team’s success from rags to riches and then back to rags again and as a Buffs fan; it has been a hell of a rollercoaster season for us.

How have the Colorado Buffaloes performed this season under Deion Sanders?

The season started with a bang for the Buffs with an unexpected victory against the TCU Horned Frogs. The Buffs managed to shock the entire NCAA community when they upstaged the TCU team by a score of 45-42. No one, including myself, believed that the team could make such an impact in their season opener, but I feel like I underestimated the intellect that Coach Prime brings to the field.

This match set the precedent for Deion’s reputation in the league. With his dominant personality and inspiring words, the Colorado Buffaloes had a newfound fame to the team yet, their performance in the coming games would progressively get worse. After the 3-0 win, they suffered their worst losses of the season when they were defeated by the Oregon Ducks by an atrocious score of 42-6.

They went on to lose a few more games against the Stanford Cardinal, the UCLA Bruins, and the Oregon State Beavers. It shattered any hopes that I held for the Buffaloes making it to the championship finals. With every loss that they faced, it became progressively more difficult for me to defend the team and the man himself. But even with a poor 4-5 record that they currently stand on, they still have a shot at making it into the playoffs, and here’s how.

This is how the Buffaloes have a slight chance of making it into the playoffs.

According to the NCAA rulebook, a team should have a record of a minimum of 6 wins in the regular season to make it into the playoffs. The Buffaloes currently stand on a 4-5 record, meaning that they’ll have to win their next 2 matches out of the 3 that are left. But I feel like at this point, it will take an uncanny miracle for the Buffs to survive their exit and make it into the playoffs.

If there aren’t enough teams at 6-6 or better, James Madison and Jacksonville State will be the next candidates. The Bowls will then invite 5-7 teams, with Colorado’s best chance at making a bowl game due to their recent performance and potential postseason excitement. So maybe it’s not over yet for the team, but they will need a lot of prayers to ensure that this sort of opportunity comes their way.

As a Buffs fan, it’s going to be sad seeing all the hard work that Coach Prime and the team put in go in vain. Because we’re ardent supporters of the team, we set the expectations too high for them. It would’ve been a miracle if Coach Prime had been able to win the championship in his debut season and thus, the fates acted accordingly. While we desperately hope they can scrape through to the playoffs, it seems like we all realize the harsh truth about it all in the back of our minds.

The pivotal moments of the Buffaloes this season

While the Buffaloes failed to make their mark in the league, they had a good run altogether. I’m personally going to miss Deion Sanders and his post-match conferences that would make me believe that the next match’s outcome will be different. The unrealistic optimism came with the thrill of chasing the impossible and will continue to be a part of all the Buffaloes’ fans for a long time.

Even though the Buffs didn’t win a lot of games, they sure did win a lot of hearts. Like the game between the Buffs and the CSU Rams, where Shedeur managed to take the game into double overtime and win it for us. One of the career-defining moments of Shedeur’s career and hopefully, he can be a part of the NFL soon with the way he’s performed this season.

The outstanding entry of Coach Prime into the league will always be etched into Colorado’s history. Even before he stepped onto the field, several criticized him for being “just another celebrity coach” but he proved them wrong through his team’s performance rather than his words. That is something that’ll resonate with me for a very long time as it gives the message of letting your actions speak louder than your words f. Coach Prime couldn’t win the league but undoubtedly he was the most influential coach in this year’s NCAA season and for all the right reasons. Unfortunately, his path to glory will be cut short by a mediocre team, but it’s not over till it’s over as they look forward to winning their coming 3 games.
