Jimbo Fisher, the recently ousted head coach of the Texas A&M football team, was fired earlier this week. Fisher’s termination is projected to result in a buyout exceeding $77 million, to be disbursed over the next eight years, the largest payout in Texas history. Fisher’s initial hiring in 2017 involved a substantial 10-year, $75-million contract and the addition of a pompous replica NCAA Championship trophy without a specified year. With Fisher and the trophy now in the past, athletic director Ross Bjork is leading a determined quest for top-tier coaching talent.

While the hunt for the new head coach runs its course, former American football running back Maurice Clarett shared his perspective on the latest episode of Come And Talk 2 Me’.

“I am not hating on Jimbo Fisher”: Clarett weighs in on Texas A&M

The former running back draws attention to an interesting but polarizing situation taking shape at Texas A&M. The university, following the firing of their head coach who they were already paying 80 million, now has to look for a new head coach and pay the new head coach separately over and above the old head coach’s buyout. This makes it evident that the university has no dearth of funds, yet college football players are not compensated.

He said, “He was let go from Texas A&M and they had to buyout his contract, total buyout from everything, all comes up to like a 127 million. I am not hating on Jimbo Fisher.”

Clarett opines that in order “to have that money spread out evenly you have to have someone sit down and advocate for these guys.”

This is precisely what the talk has been on the internet- How does a university pay someone 80 million but fall short when it comes to funding its players? This refers to a recent NCAA ruling that allows college athletes to gain monetary benefits from their name, image, and likeness money, however, not many people are aware of how it is more dependent on brands and sponsorship outside the university and not related to the university’s funds. But when it comes down to Texas coach, the university is gearing up to shed a few more 80 to 100 million dollars in pursuit of a suitable head coach candidate. And many outstanding coaching candidates have already been associated with the vacancy in Texas.

Who is on Texas A&M’s coaching radar?

Texas A&M’s search for a new head coach is in progress, with candidates like Mike Elko, the current defensive coordinator, Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss, and Mike Norvell from Florida State under consideration. The biggest candidate under consideration was Oregon’s Dan Lanning, a CFP contender with sufficient SEC experience. Lanning, however, values Oregon’s resources and support, emphasizing winning and on-field excellence. Mike Norvell from Florida State was also linked to the Texas A&M vacancy, but like Lanning, he too seems unlikely to leave his current position.

Another notable consideration was COorado’s Deion Sanders who has been having a difficult time keeping up with the expectations or the wins. Stephen A Smith even suggested that he take up the coaching opportunity with Texas on ‘Undisputed’. But Sanders calmly shut down all suggestions during his weekly press meet, stating that he is more interested and focused on another crucial win and keeping his team bowl-eligible for the season instead. The Aggies prioritize stability and success in their coaching search, crucial for shaping the future of the football program.
