Controversy seems to be the other name for Deion Sanders. Ever since Sanders took up the coaching role in the Colorado Buffaloes, he has been in some controversy or the other. The latest was the comment by a former player of the program, Xavier Smith. The charge brought up by Smith against Coach Prime is the Buffs HC’s critical nature.

Picking this up, the college football has been torn into two groups. Sanders took the matter into his own hands to reply to his attackers on social media. This topic was later taken up in the Fox Sports Radio’s YouTube show, “THE ODD COUPLE”, where Chris Broussard condemned the coach’s action.

The American sports analyst, Broussard and columnist, Rob Parker has taken up the controversy that Sanders has put himself into. Coach Prime received pushback from Smith. In his father’s defense, Shedeur took a stand on Twitter where he attacked Smith and wrote, “Ion (sic) even remember him (to be honest). Bro had to be very mid at best.” It was then, that Deion took the comment section by storm. Condemning Coach Prime’s action, Broussard stated, “I just have a problem with that stuff with Deion getting involved in it at this level. He’s a college football coach. He has to be an authority, he’s above the players, he should not get involved in their little back and forth trash talking.”

As pointed out by Broussard,  Deion Sanders responded to a commenter who said, “Hey tell your son stop acting like he’s the coldest out there”  to which Coach Prime responded, “He’ll be a top-five pick. Where’s your son going? LOL”. But above all, the entire situation transpired as a repercussion of Smith’s comment.

Xavier’s grievance against Sanders

In a one-to-one interview with The Athletic on April 29, Smith, who is now at UTEP, shared in detail about the treatment he received under Deion Sanders. Since December 2022, when he stepped into Boulder, the safety confessed,  “I was actually getting mad, like tears coming to my eyes. Because, bro, you never even tried to get to know me”

He further added how it was not him and that Coach Prime did this to everyone,  “He was destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves. The way he did it, it could’ve been done with a little more compassion.” Smith further delved that, the Buffs HC refused to even spare a moment to have a discussion with him as decided to enter the transfer portal. It was at that moment that the safety felt unappreciated in Boulder.

As the back-and-forth attacks continued, along with Smith more than a dozen of players sought respect and appreciation out of Boulder. As much as it created shockwaves within the Buffs program, a majority of the current roster did share good words about Deion Sanders.
