J.J. McCarthy's laugh at Ohio State—Is Michigan set to dominate the Big Ten again?

Can Michigan score another season of dominance? Right from 2022, former Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy and the Wolverines made it their goal to beat Ohio State when he said, “For us, the whole 10-year stretch of us not winning – that’s all we know is beating Ohio State right now.” They went on to crush their arch-rival in The Game that year to end a 10-season drought. Since then, the Wolverines’ dominance has been prevailing.

Michigan swept up the prestigious honor of being the national champions last season. But that was a different roster under Jim Harbaugh’s coaching before he left to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. So what’s up with the Wolverines now under new head coach Sherrone Moore?

Former Michigan QB JJ McCarthy seems to be quite confident in his previous team after being selected as the ninth overall by the Minnesota Vikings. On his IG story on July 14, he uploaded a post with the information that goes — “100% of OSU’s 2024 roster has never beaten Michigan.” The ex-Wolverines QB who led his team to the 2023 national title didn’t need words except for a blushing emoji, which almost feels like rubbing salt in the wounds of Ohio State as sweetly as he can.

Michigan and Ohio State rivalry goes on and this season, despite the Buckeyes’ formidable 2024 roster, they haven’t won any game against them. Former coach Urban Meyer said of the new Buckeyes roster to 10TV’s Adam King, “As of now this is one of the most talented rosters in the last decade, maybe ever. I mean, that’s a big statement. They’ve got to play. But you look at the quality of athletes at every position. I’ve never seen anything like it.” Despite this, these players are fresh off a winning experience against the Wolverines. But do they have it in them to become Michigan’s worthy opponent in 2024? The Wolverines aren’t sitting idle when it comes to their recruitment either.

Michigan’s latest commitments

Things may have started on a slow note under Sherrone Moore’s first head coaching role, but the Wolverines are getting back on track. They’ve landed 16 commits and are ranked No. 12 in the nation according to 247Sports. One of their latest commits is 4-star RB Donovan Johnson, who chose the national championship team over other powerhouses like Ohio State, Georgia, and Alabama, among others.

Another player to join Moore’s program is 3-star WR Phillip Wright, despite offers from LSU and Georgia, among others. Rated as the No. 21 prospect in Louisiana according to 247Sports, he joins as the second receiver after 4-star Jacob Washington. Will they be able to relive last season’s success? Only time will tell.
