To be ignored and, eventually, dismissed hurt. I can’t speak to why he did it. I just have to respect that he did.”  These are the words of former CU Buffs linebacker Eoghan Kerry, and the person he is talking about is his former coach, Deion Sanders.

Coach Prime Deion Sanders is steering through various challenges in both his personal and professional life. From the legend of his greatness almost getting confirmed in popular football culture to being on the receiving end of criticism from naysayers, his debut as Colorado’s head coach has been anything but uneventful. And now that it’s the season to recruit and let go, this former Colorado Buffaloes player has added more heat to Coach Prime’s offhand coaching approach.

Eoghan Kerry has his own story to tell about how he was released from Colorado. In a recent episode of the podcast Fearless with Jason Whitlock, Kerry expressed his disappointment with Coach Prime’s behavior. He narrated the details of how he was let go and how Deion Sanders did nothing to prevent what unfolded.

He recalled how Linebacker coach Andre Hart cut him off from the team by saying, “Hey Eoghan, you’re a heck of a player. You’re a really smart kid, one of the smartest I’ve ever coached. But we have to let you go.”

Eoghan Kerry exposes Coach Prime’s cold behavior

Deion Sanders didn’t even intervene in the process and only urged Hart, saying, “Tell him why.” Coach Hart presented the reason why they had decided to let go of Eoghan Kerry. According to coach Hart, Kerry wasn’t playing enough linebacker, and the team needed an “older, more physical, stronger guy” than he was. He continued, “So you don’t have a spot here.”  Later, Kerry would go on to add,I thought he was going to come in, mentor me, and kind of take me under his wing because he wanted to see people like me who grew up with their mom and of African-American descent excel.” Kerry also went on to describe his feelings at the moment by saying, ” My heart sank, and it was hard for me to hear.”  Coach Prime has yet to respond to this criticism.

If things went down the way that Kerry narrated them,  it would be quite cold of Deion Sanders to release a player on such a note. The Santa Ana native played 11 games with the Buffs in 2022 and accounted for four tackles and two solos. He entered the transfer portal this year and is looking for a new home that will hopefully receive him with open arms and mentor him to be the best he can be.
