How hectic of a schedule NCAA has, it can make a coach scratch his head in tiredness all the damn time. We have Dan Lanning coming in and saying that it is a ‘nonsensical model’ which makes us realize how hectic it would be for them to cope. College football has a model that does not align with the dire need that football as a sport has, which is a speedy decision that has a lot of sureties so that one can plan for the next move.
With the National Championship in January, still, the players still have not given up their commitments as they do not know if they will be playing for another season or if they will go for the NFL roaster. Dan Lanning discusses the same on a podcast with Klatt.
The ‘Nonsensical Model’ of CFB

The game never stops for College Football. After CFB brought in a four-team playoff system in 2014 to decide a National Champion, it has been like a marathon since then. The playoff consists of two semi-final games. These are usually held at major bowl games, which rotate every year among the six New Year’s Six bowls with #1 v/s #4 and #2 v/s #3 fight. For Coaches and players to the other staff members, it definitely becomes a hectic schedule. Starting from selections to semi-finals to a national championship. Not forgetting all of this requires great attention, on a loss and can ruin it all for the team. Imagine the amount of pressure a Head Coach deals with at this point. On The Joel Klatt Show podcast released on July 29th, Dane Lanning also brought on this angle where he unhesitantly expressed the situation of the whole fraternity. He said, “I’m hoping that you know, the NFL recognizes that as well, that that’ll be something that can change in college football because obviously, that doesn’t make sense” Seemed like he was speaking on everyone’s behalf.

He mentioned how wild it is that we are playing the National Championship on January 20th, 2025, which is not even 6 months away, yet no one has any clue of the players who are going to be on the team. He also made another valid point, that the fact that teams are currently playing their season but the players are yet to decide if they want to come back to the team for another season or if they want to go for the NFL, the uncertainty takes it all away. Gives no time for the players and the coaches to put in the best that they can. Many things keep happening without any gaps in between, making it difficult to be prepared for the next one.
A ‘Super League’ proposal replacing NCAA and CFP

All the college presidents, along with a senior NFL executive and co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, came up with the proposal of a ‘Super League’ that would replace NCAA and CFP. What difference that would make? Will the job get easier for everyone? The idea aims to create a new competition structure that divides all 134 FBS teams into two levels. This means that teams would group in a way that allows for more competitive balance. Instead of a group picking which teams go to the playoffs, the winners of different leagues would automatically qualify for the playoffs.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Dan Lanning right? Does the CFP model need a complete overhaul for fairness?
Have an interesting take?
This new system would create an organization that talks with players about their rights to make money from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). The organization would also assist in setting rules about player payment and facilitating transfers to other schools for players who wish to switch teams. With all the hardships that come into play with the NCAA, let us see if the NCAA brings any changes.
