Deion Sanders aka Coach Prime, another legendary coach, took to X on January 10th to tweet on his mentor’s retirement. He tweeted, “WOW! College Football just lost the GOAT to retirement. WOW! I knew it would happen 1 day soon but not this soon. The game has change so much that it chased the GOAT away. College football let’s hold up our mirrors and say HONESTLY what u see. #CoachPrime @CUBuffsFootball.” Coach Prime’s comments were in reference to Saban’s retirement and the growing controversy surrounding the changes in Names, Images, and Likeness (NIL).

Now, in an exclusive interview with Chris Low of ESPN, Saban said, “I thought we could have a hell of a team next year, and then maybe 70 or 80% of the players you talk to, all they want to know is two things: What assurances do I have that I’m going to play because they’re thinking about transferring, and how much are you going to pay me?

Although Saban has not directly stated it, but he is referring to the impact of NIL on college football players, which probably forced him into retirement. This was predicted by Saban’s former student, Deion Sanders as well.

The NIL, introduced in June 2021, lets college athletes profit from endorsements, changing NCAA rules. Top athletes can now earn big money, blurring the lines between amateur and professional. While earlier college football was treated as a playground to groom players, the NIL has shifted the focus toward the commercial aspect of the game. It has been pointed out by Coach Prime on numerous occasions.

Deion Sanders believes NIL deals will affect college football negatively

Sanders’ sentiments regarding the NIL deal have been consistent even though his son, Sheduer Sanders sits at the second position with $4.7 million, just behind Bronny James. Coach Prime believes in virtues like hard work and patience and considers them as the path to success. He believes that the NIL deals will affect college football players negatively, as they won’t be able to handle the trials and tribulations. He claimed, “You guys want it right now and you can’t really handle that light and handle the adversity and handle the trials and tribulations and you’re not really ready for that because you just came out of the womb.” His comments highlight his experience in the world of the NFL. However, fans will have to wait and see how this pans out.
