On January 26, 2024, the University of Michigan football program welcomed Moore as its 21st head coach. A new chapter is written in bold in the history of Michigan football as Sherrone Moore assumes the role of the new head coach. Besides possessing a seasoned football mind, Moore becomes the first African American head coach in the storied history of the program. As Michigan embraces a trailblazer at the helm, comes into the forefront of the new coach’s rich career before stepping into the role of head coach.     

Moore debuted in junior college football for Buttler Community College and then transferred to Oklahoma in 2006. It was there he appeared as an offensive guard for 14 games. With his contribution as offensive guard, the Sooners won two Big 12 Championships and made an appearance in two BCS bowl games. However, his stint as a player did not continue for long.

He began his coaching journey in 2009 at the University of Louisville, never even getting to be a part of the Wolverines franchise as a player. In a recent Instagram post, he revealed how his coaching career has helped to build himself.

Serving as a Graduate Assistant (offense) for three impactful seasons, Moore played a huge role in the success of the team. He propelled Sooners to grab a 23-3 record, followed by a BCS bowl appearance and a Big East title in 2012. Moore refused to restrict himself to one role and in 2012-13 transitioned as Tight Ends Coach. Following this, in the next year, he took charge of the Tight Ends group.

Moore’s journey to Michigan involved four successful seasons at Central Michigan before making his way to the Wolverines. With a background in offensive coaching, he displayed leadership he dedicated himself to fostering a diverse coaching landscape.  

Making an impact in the Wolverines

It was in 2018 that Moore embarked on a new chapter with the University of Michigan with a position as the Tight Ends coach. In effect to his commitment, his tenure saw a remarkable impact. On this note, under his guidance, player development improved and his guidance combined 1,611 yards, 13 touchdowns and 119 receptions.   

Moore made a profound impact as a member of the offensive staff before he ascended to the head coaching role. His contribution towards the offensive success finds recognition in three back-to-back Big Ten Championships (2021-2023) followed by them claiming the 2023 national title. However, this was not the end of Moore’s coaching influence in the Wolverines, as the success spree continued with All-Big Ten honors and all-conference honorable mentions.

With this, his coaching prowess manifested the development of notable players. Notably, his guidance produced four draft picks at tight end and offensive line during his tenure. As he takes the reigns, Michigan football braces for a future and witnesses the new head coach’s ability to redefine the narrative of success in the program.
