Despite the Trojans missing the top 4 CFP spots, Caleb Williams stood out last season as one of the NCAA’s top quarterbacks, showcasing exceptional passing skills. He threw for over 3,633 yards and completed 30 touchdowns. As the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, he’s projected to be the number 1 draft pick at this year’s NFL Draft.

Aside from his talent, Williams is recognized for his unique advocacy efforts, especially in mental health awareness. He frequently makes headlines by conveying messages through his fingernails. However, he also faces criticism at times. Does the bold choice deserve praise or disapproval?

Quarterback Caleb Williams of the USC Trojans has always drawn attention for his nail painting. This practice, now a signature part of his look, gained prominence during his stint as QB for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2021. Despite facing occasional criticism, he doesn’t deserve it for all the positive actions he takes. He uses nail painting to spread unique awareness messages and participates in various acts of goodness.

In an earlier interview with People, Williams said, “I think the nails thing kind of took everybody by surprise,”. He said shortly after filming a new advertisement for his partnership with Dr Pepper. “I’ve been doing it before college, but it took everybody by surprise, just because you don’t always see male athletes who play football paint their nails. But I think it’s just another way of expression.”

Williams also revealed that his mom started painting nails at just 14 years old and used to paint his nails too. Inspired by this early exposure, Williams continued the practice into his college football career. By painting his nails, Williams not only stands out on the field but also brings attention to important causes, such as mental health awareness.

Caleb Williams is painting a message of awareness

After trolling Texas with ‘Horns Down’ following his first collegiate win, Caleb Williams continued painting his nails to send messages. He also painted “F–K ND” and “F–UTAH” during games with his opponent. However, the focus shifted when he helped two Utah fans cope with their father’s loss and watch the live game. Also, over a year ago, in Los Angeles, he used his nail paints to promote a unique awareness. On World Mental Health Day in 2022, he painted the phone number of the suicide and crisis lifeline, 988, on his middle, ring, and pinky fingers. This drew attention to the US-based suicide prevention network of over 200+ crisis centers providing 24/7 service via a toll-free hotline.

Caleb Williams didn’t stop at spreading awareness through his painted fingernails; he also founded the ‘Caleb Cares Foundation‘. This foundation commits to fighting bullies and empowering underdogs. Further, he participated in the ‘Seize The Awkward’ campaign to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. Williams frequently combines his NIL opportunities with causes he cares about. Despite facing some backlash, his message sparks meaningful conversations.
