Will we see a big Buffs splash at the Big 12 this year? Coach Deion Sanders thinks so, having revamped the roster and brought in a ton of new players. He’s also pushing his team hard in training to create a cohesive unit.

Even sportscaster Spencer McLaughlin is optimistic. He said, “I think Colorado is a better team this year.” He pointed out how Deion addressed the team’s biggest weaknesses: “Offseason moves have been trenches-oriented, and that’s what they needed.” Last year, “they couldn’t stop the run, they couldn’t protect Shedeur (Sanders).” But this time, those areas are a clear focus.

However, on a recent Locked On Buffs show, McLaughlin again threw some cold water on the excitement. He questioned their title-winning hopes, stating, “But to say you’re going to go from a four-win team even with the number of offseason moves they’ve made to contending in the Big 12. Do not see it.” He then elaborated on his doubts, stating, “It’s the deepest conference in America when you’re looking at the number of teams that can reasonably win the conference title. Colorado is not one of those teams.”

McLaughlin added that even “if everything goes perfectly,” Deion’s team can achieve a 9-3 record at best, and winning the title is out of reach. It’s true that the Buffs have a tougher schedule with powerhouses like Utah, Oklahoma, and Kansas State this time, but Deion Sanders finds a glimmer of hope amidst the skepticism. Can the revamped Buffs rise above the doubters and pull off some surprises?

Is Deion Sanders’ team on the rise?

A bit of optimism still prevails as ESPN recently released their FPI — Football Power Index — for 2024. The FPI predicts win probabilities and playoff chances for college teams, offering a glimpse into the upcoming season. Last year, the Buffaloes didn’t do well, ranking 77th in the FPI rankings, which showed in their disappointing 4-8 season. This year, however, there’s a dramatic shift. The Buffs have climbed a significant 41 spots, landing at 36, that too with a projected 6.3 wins.

While the improved FPI ranking is a positive sign for the Colorado Buffaloes, it doesn’t guarantee a championship run. The new Buffs roster made a great showcase in the Black and Gold spring game (29-24 win). However, the FPI analysts aren’t very impressed, as they’re not predicting a championship for the Buffs yet. They project a 5.8% chance of making the playoffs and a mere 4.1% chance of winning the conference.

Despite these skeptical stats and doubts about their Big 12 hopes, August will be crucial. Can Deion Sanders and his Buffs silence the doubters and exceed the FPI’s predictions?
