People widely consider the pride and might of the Texas Longhorns to be one of the best QBs in the class of 2024, but such a reputation also attracts harsh criticism. This time, the comparison is between Quinn Ewers and Patrick Mahomes as the critics point out talented QBs’ in-game flaws.

Quinn Ewers, the quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, is considered to be a top-3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Moreover, he holds a lot of credibility as he was also one of the three QBs to be on the main cover of the upcoming EA Sports’ College Football 25 game, standing beside Travis Hunter and Donovan Edwards. However, as per a few anonymous coaches, Ewers is not as athletic nor brave enough when it comes to performing on the gridiron as compared to the NFL’s Patrick Mahomes.

The weight on Ewers’ shoulders seems to be more immense than ever. Additionally, the competition between him and Arch Manning is fierce, as the 19-year-old is set to be the next starting QB in case Ewers ends up performing poorly. Moreover, the Athletic’s Bruce Feldman revealed some shocking opinions on Quinn Ewers as per anonymous coaches that are ripping the QB a new one with their harsh opinions.

One coach was heard saying, “There are times, he just seems to be a little timid.” Furthermore, a Big 12 defensive coordinator compared Ewers’ overall attention to the game to Mahomes and said that Texas’ QB is miles behind the 3-time SB-winning player. He said, “He’s not anywhere near as athletic nor the playmaker (Patrick) Mahomes is or has that kind of presence.” It’s almost ironic that Ewers’ nickname is “Mullet Mahomes” because of the exceptional talent he’s showcased and yet, the NFL specialists keep being bashful towards the QB. With all that said, here’s a look at what Ewers’ current coach, Steve Sarkisian, had to say about him as he approaches his 3rd year with the team.

Undoubtedly, Ewers is one of the top contenders for the 2024 Heisman Trophy this year, while fighting against the likes of Carson Beck and Shedeur Sanders. Additionally, he ranked in the 3rd position during the 2023 Heisman race and as such, he would want to go all the way this year. With so much expected of the Texas QB, Sarkisian believes that Ewers is cooler than ever despite the mighty stakes.

Steve Sarkisian met with the media in April and talked about how his prized QB was feeling, as he stepped into his 3rd season. He said, “I think Quinn’s really enjoying his time right now, and that’s how you should be in Year 3. The fun part for me is I get to keep coaching him hard, and I get to keep coaching him hard on stuff that maybe I wasn’t as hard on him with in the past. But that’s how you keep pushing a guy to be the best that he can be.

It is clear Sarkisian means to push Ewers beyond his limits in his last season of eligibility that he plays for the Longhorns, ensuring that it be his best one yet. Moreover, even though Ewers doesn’t really stand on the same level as the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, he sure is leading the team with a calm spirit but focusing on the team’s overall glory at the same time.
