The Colorado Buffs became one of the highest-grossing teams on and off the field in the 2023 season due to their ever-heightening popularity. Hence, their 4-8 record came as a huge disappointment for the Buffs fans. Being the ‘transfer portal king’, Deion Sanders made up for it by bringing in a whooping 22 transfers and recruits for their redemption season of 2023-24. Some of these transfers, like five-star recruit Jordan Seaton and UTEP transfer Justin Mayers gained the limelight because of their record-breaking numbers in the previous season. However, these weren’t the only players where the Cu Buffs bagged a treasure.

While Seaton and Mayers remain the players from whom Deion Sanders and Co. have the highest expectations, these other recruits don’t fall too far in the expectations from Coach Prime given their explosive playing sleuth.

DJ McKinney

A freshman transfer from Oklahoma, DJ McKinney is considered ‘one of the most underrated CU transfers’ by the DNVR podcast. He committed to Deion Sanders and Co on January 7th, weeks after Jordan Seaton’s announcement. Hence, getting buried under Seaton’s hype.

However, as a cornerback red-shirt freshman, McKinney had a very productive year last season with 38 tackles, 7 of which came as a season-high against Texas. His sticky coverage and aggressive going toward the football would present him as a competitive option against Hunter, Cormani, and Cooper. As the DNVR podcast puts it, “He’s flying under the radar.”

Taurean Carter

Carter committed early to SMU but later flipped to CU, which is considered a great decision for CU defense. The Arkansas transfer’s massive 6’3″ 303 lbs physique brings in the size and strength that Buffs’ defense needs. Carter’s addition to the defense line would give the ultimate size boost that Shane Cokes and Leonard Payne’s slither needed.

Speaking of his past numbers, the senior comes in after missing the 2022 season due to an ACL tear. Yet, in the following season, he returned with the same form, capturing 3 and a half TCLs and 1 and a half sacks, very similar to his 2021 record. Hence, CU can be rest assured of TCLs and sacks.

 Cordell Russell

Also known as ‘Baby To’, Cordell Russel is believed to be the best wild card entry in Buffs alongside Anquin Barnes. His massive 6’4″ 210 physique has everyone raising their eyebrows, with Bruce Matson calling him a ‘beast.

While he didn’t get much chance to display his gridiron excellence, he still has four years of eligibility remaining as a freshman. Being a four-star prospect, Russell is expected to be ‘the real player’ in the Buffs this season, per DNVR podcast.

Walter Taylor

Once Shedeur Sanders leaves for the NFL, Walter Taylor would present himself a tough competition for the starting QB position. The Vanderbilt transfer had 3 years of eligibility remaining and is expected to strengthen the QB position with his 6’5″, 235 lbs physique.

A former three-star recruit out of Alabama, Taylor, saw the field in a handful of games for the Commodores the past two years. Moreover, his big arm flexibility can sling the ball across the field while gaining yardage with his legs. A perfect fit to throw the ball at all levels.
