Controversial as ever. The infamous celebrity boxer who pepper-sprayed his opponent continues his out-of-control storm of comments. This time, the most talked about coaches in the NCAA and NFL are at his gunpoint, especially Deion Sanders. After being named the ‘Sports Person of the Year: 2023’ by Sports Illustrated, Sanders did not expect a comparison like Charleston White made.

Safe to say that fans were not pleased with what he had to say. Surely, Deion Sanders had a non-boastful 4-8 record this season. However, he managed the publicity of his team commendably, making them one of the most talked about teams in the league, all within a year. Bill Belichick, on the other hand, had an identical on-field record as Sanders, with the Patriots being at 2-9. The difference: Belichick has guided the Patriots to multiple Super Bowls with players like Tom Brady, hence the stern controversies going on against him.

Charleston White, being himself, had a rather differing (and highly controversial) opinion about the two than the general wave of thoughts. “People know that you ain’t going to get no Bill Belichick out of Deion,” was what White believed in. The reason for it? White’s staunch belief in racism impacting the sports world negatively, especially for Black coaches. To prove his point further, he dished out examples of Avery Johnson: the Alabama basketball coach who was fired. And Joshua Primo, the San Antonio Spurs player, who was suspended for ‘inappropriate and offensive behavior’.

White feels that there is little to no scope for Black coaches in football, even going to the extreme of bluntly pointing it out, “Black coaches can’t coach.” He also brought up white coaches like Pat Riley and Tony Dungy, claiming that either of them “ain’t no good coach”. Looking at Deion Sanders’ recent achievements, the comment is arguable.

On Thursday, Sports Illustrated surprised each Sanders fan by declaring him to be the Sports Person of the Year. Critics on the other hand were not too glad to hear it, using Colorado’s record as their defense. However, Sanders’ achievements speak for themselves.
