Deion Sanders, the coach for the Colorado Buffaloes, talks about why he doesn’t want to make the switch to pro football in the most humbling way. The 56-year-old signed with the Buffs this season on a 5-year contract. Though his team had an upsetting record, he still wouldn’t leave college football for the NFL despite being offered generous contracts.
The Colorado Buffaloes ended their season with a record of 4-8 and were in the last position in the Pac-12 league. With such an outcome for the team, it would make sense if Deion considered a shift to the NFL for better opportunities and a massive increase in the paycheck. But it seems as if Coach Prime is here to stay and has listed down all his reasons for choosing to stay at the university level.

On the latest episode of the famous ‘Nightcap’ show, Deion joined Shannon and Johnson as guests and answered questions about his thoughts on training the Chargers in the NFL. When Deion said that he didn’t want to do pros, Johnson stepped in and said that he didn’t believe that Deion would say no if the Los Angeles Chargers flaunted their money in front of him.
Deion replied to the claims very smoothly and said, “God provided everything I need man. I’m having the time of my life. I love Colorado, I love the kids that I get to coach, I love the recruiting process, I love it. So I like the way it sounds and I like the purity of the young men. I like the purity of the young men. I like the sensitivities and I like all that and the amateurism of it even though it’s turning to Pros because everybody wants a bag now.” Thus, while he didn’t make a strong impact in the league this year, he definitely influenced a lot of fans in the community with his personality. As such, he was announced as the Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated, but the fans weren’t too happy with his achievement.
Deion became the Sportsperson of the Year but didn’t receive his flowers from the football community
On November 30th, it was announced that Deion Sanders was the official pick for 2023’s Sportsperson of the Year award. While most of the Buffs’ fans couldn’t stop chiming in with their well wishes, the rest of the world had their jaws open in disbelief.

The Colorado team just had four wins this season, only one of which was a conference game. Yes, Deion sure has been an inspiring figure in the hardest of times, but his lack of success shouldn’t have been awarded the way it was. The fans had a hard time swallowing the news, with one fan writing, “At least give it to someone who’s earned it. If/when Deion wins 10 games at Colorado, then give it to him.” It’s evident that the team didn’t do well, and the fans expect them to do better next season, but Deion will have to redeem himself to retain his reputation as the Sportsperson of the Year.
