Shortly before the start of 2024, the Buff Nation received the news that defensive coordinator Charles Kelly would be departing Colorado after just one season. Opting to return to his southern roots, Kelly is set to join the coaching staff of the Auburn Tigers. This departure leaves Coach Prime, also known as Deion Sanders, in the position of having to not only find a replacement for his defensive coordinator but also fill the void left by one of his most impactful recruiters.

Deion Sanders and his coaching staff are finally nearing the selection of a new defensive coordinator for the Boulder team. In his recent appearance on ‘UNDISPUTED,’ Coach Prime shared insights into the ongoing search process and the definitive lifelines. “We’re probably going to hire a defensive coordinator within the next two days, maybe today,” said the coach.

Colorado is looking for coaching candidates with prior experience in the NFL, “I want a pro guy that can teach and instruct at another level.” An able candidate who can effectively train young athletes to achieve successful professional football careers, “because that’s where these guys are headed and I want to give them the navigational system to get there.”

Sanders revealed that he has narrowed down the list to three final candidates. While he remained tight-lipped about their identities and specific levels of experience, notable names like Ed Reed and Mike Zimmer have surfaced as potential candidates expressing interest in the position. Coach Prime also revealed that he is looking forward to achieving new heights in the upcoming season, “I’m excited about the season,” since they “have everything we need to be successful.” While the hunt for the perfect coaching fit rages on, Coach Prime is presented with a brand new abode in Boulder, which kick-starts the new season on a positive note.

While Zimmer brings significant NFL experience, including coaching, his impact on recruiting remains a question. On the other hand, Reed, a Hall-of-Famer, boasts a compelling track record in recruiting. Sanders seems inclined toward an experienced NFL candidate, possibly waiting for the off-season to finalize the decision. A prompt resolution is expected, according to Coach Prime’s recent communication with the staff. Sanders, who inked a five-year contract in December 2022, is committed to the school beyond his sons’ draft declarations. Under Sanders’ leadership, the Buffaloes concluded the 2023 season with a 4-8 record, and they are set to join the Big 12 for the upcoming 2024 season.
