Deion Sanders Opens Up About the Emotional Toll of Having Two Toes Amputated: “You Could Barely Even Walk”

Deion Sanders, former NFL player turned football coach at the Colorado Buffaloes, has faced challenges throughout his career, both on and off the field. As he gears up for the 2024 College Football season, Sanders is determined to redeem himself after a somewhat rocky start in Boulder. Sanders underwent the amputation of his left big toe and second toe. The revelation was unveiled during the concluding installments of the Coach Prime docuseries, produced by Barstool Sports and SMAC Entertainment. This documentary, available for streaming on barstoolsports.com, offers an intimate portrayal of Deion Sanders, also known as “Neon Deion,” as he guides his team at Jackson State University. This unexpected turn of events followed routine surgery in September to address a dislocated toe and inflamed nerve. Coach Prime recently revisited the horrors in his interview where he acknowledged how life has shaped up post his surgery. The head coach has a positive approach to the situation, saying, “I can’t run like I used to,” but he can still run, and that to him makes all the difference. 

The situation took a dire turn when Sanders noticed his toes turning black a few weeks post-surgery. Rushed to the hospital, doctors identified life-threatening blood clots in his femoral artery, a critical blood vessel in the leg. Dr. Steven Sheskier, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle surgery, emphasized the severity of Sanders’ condition, noting the potential need for toe and even leg amputation to save his life. Sanders candidly recounted the harrowing experience, revealing the uncertainty and fear surrounding his health. The possibility of losing his toes, and then facing the prospect of leg amputation, underscored the gravity of the situation and the lengths taken to ensure his survival.

Coach Prime addresses new gameplan 

Heading into the 2024 season, Deion Sanders maintains an optimistic outlook despite the setbacks of the previous year. He underscores the importance of depth and comprehension in elevating the team’s performance. Sanders highlights the acquisitions of linemen to safeguard Shedeur and defensive playmakers to enhance the defense, “I went out and signed seven linemen to protect Shedeur.” With alterations in coaching personnel and strategic player acquisitions, notably NFL-experienced coordinators, Sanders expresses confidence in the team’s potential for success.
