Focused, confident, and determined with dynamic leadership qualities and a powerful online and social presence! That’s how I would personally describe Coach Prime Deion Sanders. Imagine being an inspiration strong enough to drive even a legend like LeBron James in his approach to games, and many more celebrities and elite players and recruits!

I think the Deion Sanders effect is nothing short of phenomenal. It’s like Coach Prime woke up a sleeping giant with the Deion Sanders effect in Boulder. He was already a two-time SWAC champion as the head coach at Jackson State University before his transfer to Colorado in December 2022. But it was the 2023 season with the Colorado Buffaloes that cemented his status as one of the most influential college football head coaches.

The ‘Deion Sanders Effect’ in Colorado

Right upon his arrival, Coach Prime brought with him his two sons, star QB Shedeur Sanders and safety Shilo Sanders, and two-way star Travis Hunter. This made a difference in the team’s gameplay, along with his strict discipline and coaching style. But aside from delivering an impressive 3-0 start to the season, Deion Sanders’ dedication towards Colorado is what propelled the team to extreme heights.

The Buffs sold out all their regular season games. They even became ESPN’s most-watched football game with 9.3 million views in their game against the Colorado State Rams. Colorado also came fourth in the most-watched college football team in a weekly average with 4.50M views.

Deion Sanders fused his personal brand with the Buffs, leading to more social coverage and popularity. Colorado experienced a staggering 700% boost in merchandise sales compared to last season. I would say it’s a big step in commitment towards the program because he has now sealed himself to stick around for a long time.

Deion Sanders’ impact on big names and celebrities

The rising popularity of Deion Sanders not only caught the attention of the press and college football fans and programs but also big names like Dwayne The Rock Johnson. He said of Coach Prime, “Coach Prime is changing the face of college football and he’s doing it his way but he’s also doing it in a way that is galvanizing not only a town in Boulder, Colorado but also galvanizing an entire country.

NBA legend LeBron James also put Coach Prime on the pedestal, saying, “Prime Time is the one who taught me: ‘Look good, feel good. Feel good, play good. Play good, they pay good.’ I still lay my uniform out on the floor and take a look at it before I put it on. I got that from Deion. He always looked good on the field—and he didn’t just talk about it, he was about it. It was amazing to watch.

LeBron James attended Colorado’s game against the USC Trojans, which was also attended by rap mogul Lil Wayne. It’s a legend hyping another legend when Coach Prime said, “You mean to tell me Lil Wayne is at a college game performing before the game? This is unbelievable, this is what college is supposed to be… all the kids are having a good time… I love it 100%.” Deion Sanders’ true emotions about Colorado run clear as he continued, “I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying life, coaching my sons in a beautiful city. The weather is impeccable. I ain’t got nothing to be mad at.

Deion Sanders’ hype isn’t over yet

This isn’t the end of Coach Prime’s reign as an inspirational figure and face of the Colorado college football scene. Although they could’ve done better this season, Deion Sanders has already achieved impressive records in Colorado, drawing the interest of many elite recruits. The Buffs already have 10 committed players, including 5-star recruit Jordan Seaton

The No. 1 OT said on Undisputed, “You gotta believe in Coach Prime. Having the opportunity to play with somebody who has done it at the highest level, gold jacket level, very few can say they did that. I’ve got two Heisman Trophy candidates – Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. They’re amazing. You know how they go.”

Coach Prime calls 2024 “a season of expectation.” The 56-year-old said, “Right now, we are recruiting our butts off. I’m recruiting as I speak. The expectation is everything. We have players that can get it done. We have a tremendous coaching staff. Now, we just got to add a few more pieces to the puzzle.

True, things didn’t end the way Coach Prime and the Buffs, or any Colorado fan wished it to be as they finished the season 4-8. But putting aside the record, everyone can see that Coach Prime’s presence made a huge difference in the Colorado college football scene. We have to believe in Coach Prime as he hustles the Buffs for the next season. He has already made his impact on Colorado and given fans something to expect in 2024.
