Before the 2023 season kicked off, Deion Sanders made a splash by adding Sean Lewis as Colorado’s offensive coordinator. Lewis, who previously helmed Kent State from 2018 to 2022, was widely praised as one of college football’s brightest young coaching talents. His hiring was hailed as a savvy offseason move. Despite facing challenges like an ineffective offensive line and a struggling rushing game, Colorado‘s passing offense shone brightly in the initial three weeks, contributing significantly to the team’s 3-0 start.
However, as the season progressed and quarterback Shedeur Sanders faced mounting pressure, concerns arose. With only four games left, Lewis was relieved of his play-calling duties and demoted in favor of Pat Shurmur. Despite this setback, Lewis quickly rebounded, securing a head coaching position at San Diego State. Shedeur, in his recent interviews, addressed the difficulties he faced under Lewis, but not everyone is willing to believe it.

In a pre-Super Bowl interview with DNVR, Shedeur Sanders opened up about his experience with Coach Lewis’ offensive style, expressing that it didn’t align well with his preferences. Sanders highlighted the complexity of Lewis’ offense, particularly the emphasis on “choice routes,” which often left him feeling pressured and unable to anticipate plays effectively. Moreover, Sanders noted that this approach placed a significant burden on the receivers to make critical reads, a responsibility he would have preferred to shoulder himself. Despite these challenges, Sanders achieved remarkable success on the field, setting a program record with 3,230 passing yards, along with 27 touchdowns and just three interceptions. However, Coach Jason Brown was not convinced and acknowledged the same on The Coach JB Show with Big Smitty. “I know Sean Lewis and I know what he is about as an OC,” said Brown before concluding that both Shedeur and Deion Sanders, “threw that man under the bus.” Brown further called out another big statement made by the young quarterback.
The standout quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes and son of NFL icon Deion Sanders exudes confidence in his abilities, asserting that he would be among the top quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft if he opted to declare. Despite his decision to complete his senior year in college before entering the draft next year, Sanders remains unwavering in his belief that he surpasses all other potential picks. He proudly claimed, “I’m biased, but I don’t see a quarterback that’s better than me,” Brown counter-questioned, “My question is why aren’t you in the draft then if you think you’re the best?” When it comes to criticizing Shedeur, Brown wasn’t the only one.
