Dеion Sandеrs‘ friend Richard Fain shared a playful story about the origins of the coach’s ‘Prime Time’ nickname and why Sanders owes him millions. With his recent $280 million windfall, the coach can surely spare a few millions, right?
According to Fain’s video, “Hе was thе bеst pеrson on any fiеld, court, basеball diamond, track whеn hе did it, but this particular story, I gavе him somеthing that hе has usеd to makе millions and millions of dollars… I think he made millions off of this idea and I think I need to be compensated.”
As the story goes, he revealed he gave Deion Sanders the moniker ‘Prime Time’ because they would play around 7:30-8 p.m. which is a prime time for television. Sanders was doing great with his athletic skills in school and hence, Richard Fain called him ‘Prime Time’. That nickname just stuck around and ‘Prime Time’ is now also referred to as ‘Coach Prime’.

“Little did we know, it would go on to be one of the biggest names associated with an individual in the history of sports. Because after Deion left high school, he went on to sign a pro baseball contract and he went on to sign with Florida State and when he got to Florida State, that’s when he took that name Prime Time.”
Richard Fain’s video was titled “Deion Sanders Owes Me Millions and I Want My Money Now.” However, he soon made it clear it was just an old story he wanted to share and that Deion Sanders inspires him with his discipline, consistency, and patience. Sanders’ old friend was just joking with that playful video title.
He went on to explain how Sanders’ took the ‘Prime Time’ idea forward and shaped it into something larger.

When Deion Sanders gave Richard Fain credit for his ‘Prime Time’ nickname

Sanders had written, “This is RICHARD FAIN from Ft.Myers Fla. My best friend growing up. We went to @NorthFtMyersHS played 3 sports together & he is the 1 that NICKNAMED me PRIMETIME after i dropped 36 in a basketball game & had 2 dunks that night. On the way home on the bus he said man u PRIMETIME!”
Sanders had also shared the same story on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ in 2022. That’s enough credit given to Fain, isn’t it? However, the nickname wasn’t simply given to Sanders. He had to earn it. Growing up in Florida and playing sports, one simply couldn’t take up names. They had to show they deserved it.
With Deion Sanders, the name makes sense, doesn’t it? From his baseball and football experience to coaching the Colorado Buffaloes, he has tried on different hats. After he revamped the Buffs, the team looked promising with their 3-0 record. However, they have experienced turmoil and losses in their recent games. So he will look to fix the gap after his first year with the team.
