Florida State coach Mike Norvell expressed frustration and disbelief after the Seminoles were omitted from the top four teams selected for the College Football Playoff, despite a remarkable 13-0 season. Despite overcoming challenges and engaging in demanding non-conference matchups, the Seminoles found themselves excluded from the playoff bracket for the first time since its inception in 2014. 

Norvell expressed disappointment for the resilient players and their dedicated efforts throughout the season, conveying feeling “disgusted” and “infuriated,” emphasizing the team’s deserving performance. However, he has been able to rapidly overcome the severe blow and started focusing on the next step.

In reflecting on the past couple of weeks, Coach Mike Norvell expressed, The most challenging couple weeks of coaching I’ve ever had.” Dealing with emotions like disappointment, hurt, frustration, and anger has been a period of intense introspection. He emphasized the necessity of learning how to work through these emotions. While he harbors strong feelings about not getting the playoff opportunity, he also conveyed immense pride in the team for their remarkable representation over the 13-week season.

Regardless of individual opinions on the committee’s decision, Norvell’s response has been characterized by class and resilience. Getting back to work immediately after such a significant setback showcases his commitment to the game and the team. Florida State is set to face Georgia in the Orange Bowl on December 30 and he has channeled all efforts toward putting up the best team performance. Many believe that this setback won’t define Norvell’s coaching career, and he will undoubtedly have more opportunities to reach the highest levels of collegiate football. The way he has handled this situation only reinforces the belief that this won’t be the last time Norvell contends at such a level.
