Nick Saban's legacy: Will anyone ever come close to matching his impact on college football?

The college football world has been fortunate to have Nick Saban, and Kristen Saban is even luckier to have him as her dad. Kristen gets emotional while paying tribute to her Daddy Cool, the ultimate GOAT. She re-shared a collage initially posted by the SEC network on her Instagram story. Her one-word caption spoke a million words and reflected fans’ emotions toward the coaching maestro. Even though the seven-time champion is far from the gridiron and savoring his retirement, he ensures he gives coach Lane Kiffin the best advice.

The post, which later caught Kristen’s attention, is no less than a celebrity constellation. While Saban’s picture remains dominant, it features other big shots. However, Saban was the lone wolf who howled loudest to Alabama Crimson Tide and the SEC Network. The caption said it all: “There will never be another Nick Saban.” How could Kristen not flaunt the “Saban’s daughter” badge with pride? Hence, she re-shared the poster with only a one-word caption, “Ever (holding back tears emoji).”

This one word is enough to comprehend that Kristen firmly believes Nick Saban is the Touchdown Titan of Teaching. She has her reasons to feel so. Not only Kristen, but the college football world bows down to the Saban legacy, with the former Alabama Crimson Tide HC being the GOAT. He stands alone with seven national championships. Besides, Saban has had the record for most wins against No. 1 teams for nearly a decade. The number is nine, and the most recent was against Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

Keeping aside his accolades, the ex-Alabama HC coached four Heisman Trophy winners. He spent 28 years as a head coach at the college level, but what made an impression was how he restored success and dominance in the Crimson Tide, putting them back on the elite shelf and ending their 15-year title drought. Now that Saban has entered the leisure era, he offers occasional retired coach wisdom. A few days back, the Ole Miss Rebels head coach just got lucky.

Saban’s expert advice ahead of Kiffin’s SEC competition

Kiffin’s squad is entering one of the most exciting seasons in school history. Ole Miss bagged a program-best 11 games in 2023, and they are gunning for a berth in the newly expanded College Football Playoff this fall. With this comes the burden of lofty expectations. Do not worry, Ole Miss fans. You have the best advice from Saban, the coaching guru. And what is the recommendation of former Crimson Tide’s HC?

Tune out the “rat poison.” As Kiffin shared with USA TODAY, “He said, ‘Remind those players about rat poison. Remind them that those people that are writing that stuff on the internet about how great they are, … it’s probably some big fat guy in his underwear who doesn’t know (cr*p) about football.’” The term “rat poison” is a frequent flyer in Saban’s vocab.

Have an interesting take?

The ex-Alabama head coach used it in the past to refer to outside noise. If Kiffin follows Saban’s suggestions to the T, all he will need to do is tune it out when aiming to win a national championship. It’s time to see if Kiffin can keep up with Saban’s coaching moves.
