“Justin’s going to be gone. That writing is on the wall,” was the verdict that Athletic’s Adam Jahns and Kevin Fishbain passed on Justin Fields as the NFL market rumors surrounding the Bears QB are all over the place. The Chicago Bears making the first pick on 2024 Draft Day is the most buzzing topic in the NFL. It’s hardly about ‘Who will be Matt Eberflus’s first-round pick?‘ or ‘Will it be Caleb Williams or Drake Maye landing the QB job at the Bears?’ anymore. All of that’s already said and done. Now, the debates surrounding the future of Bears incumbent starter Justin Fields have started brewing ahead of the Draft day.

Fields’ display of talent throughout his 3 seasons with the Bears has incited many to defend him amidst the current uncertainties. Former Patriots offensive guard Damien Woody blames it on the coaching discrepancy in the team, taking a direct jibe at Matt Eberflus. “That’s not what coaching is,” Woody said on ESPN’s Get Up.

“Coaching is literally taking the guy’s skill set and formulating your scheme to fit him. There’s nobody out there that’s willing to say, ‘Let’s formulate a plan to get this young, talented QB and see if we can mold him into something’. I just think it’s an indictment on the coaches in our league that no one has the plan to try to get this talent,” Woody added, condemning the lack of effort he is feeling in forging Justin Fields’ talent.

2019, the year in which Fields transferred to Ohio State from Georgia, was also one blockbuster year for the QB. The Sophomore raked in a whopping 3273 yards with 41 touchdowns for 3 interceptions, along with completing 238 passes in the 14 games he played. The next season was a slightly better blockbuster, with his 2100 yards with 22 touchdowns, along with 158 completed passes, all in the 8 games he played for Ohio State in 2020.

Simply put, he was the rockstar then, and one who was expected to become an even mightier star as soon as he stepped foot into the pro league. Bears getting their hands on one of the finest QBs then was nothing less than a gift to them, one that Eberflus solidly planned on capitalizing on. Only things did not go per Eberflus’s plan as the team had to land on this consideration for the QB this off-season walking in the 2024 off-season.

The ‘now’ of Matt Eberflus and Justin Fields

“You’re going to get better and you’re going to be able to stay locked in on your job,” Matt Eberflus advised Justin Fields when discussing his future role at the Bears amidst the looming sword on his upcoming career. During his 3 seasons with the Bears, Fields has not even excelled in his college records, looking at the numbers. The best Fields went was during the last 2023 season, when he amassed 2,562 yards, topped with 16 TDs and 9 Interceptions during the 13 games he played.

Matt Eberflus and Co. could not mask their disappointment this season, resulting in them making a major reported decision. Dan Graziano reported the Bears wanted to trade the QB but did not get the market they expected. Hence, the team will wait and watch the developments with Cousins, Mayfield, and more, and the market requirements. Once all those trades get sorted, the team might plot their next move. What do you think their next move will be?
