Cormani McClain, the highly touted 5-star cornerback who made headlines by flipping his commitment from the University of Miami to join Deion Sanders and the Buffs in January, found himself in a transitional phase in college football during the 2023 season.

Despite high expectations from fans nationwide for McClain to seamlessly transition from high school to college, the reality has been different. Through the 2023 season, McClain had limited opportunity to step onto the field for a snap of football, leaving many to wonder about his adjustment to collegiate-level play. However, the young athlete has been able to turn the setback into motivation as he prepares for the upcoming season.

Despite the considerable buzz surrounding McClain, it’s important to remember that he only graduated from high school not too long ago, and transitioning to college football involves a myriad of factors beyond just on-field performance. Sanders and his coaching staff understand this and believe that McClain still needs time to mentally and physically acclimate to the demands of collegiate-level play. In a recent video posted on platform X, McClain speaks about the measures he has undertaken to prepare for the upcoming season.

The young athlete is poised for another significant leap forward, and it’s not solely due to his physical development. He’s also focused on sharpening his mental game. McClain’s perspective on the sport has transformed. “It’s just being a better me on and off the field,” McClain says as he remains “consistent” and sets new “standards” for himself.

Although there was hope among Buffs fans that McClain would see playing time in the 2023 season, especially with the news of Travis Hunter’s absence for at least three weeks, Coach Prime remained cautious. He prioritizes McClain’s long-term development over immediate game-time exposure, aiming to ensure that McClain is fully prepared before throwing him into the fray.
