Being picked as a five-star recruit last season, Cormani McClain might not have fathomed how his first season at Colorado would turn out. Hailing from Lakeland High School had him committed to Miami, but Deion Sanders’ charm made him flip to Colorado. As the overall 14 per the 2023 recruiting class by ESPN, McClain surely expected better things in his first season.
The first, and the most impactful, bad omen came to McClain when Coach Prime benched him post-Oregon loss. Seems that the foul luck is following him around in the off-season as well. Per the latest reports of TMZ, the CB landed in yet another trouble. The only difference: it was outside, almost a mile away from the Folsom Field.
On January 15, McClain’s car “slid into another vehicle when trying to brake for a red light.” While the car crash did get him a citation for “driving too fast for the weather conditions”, the CB did not suffer any injuries, and neither did his car, per the spokesperson of the Boulder Police Department.

However, ‘Prime Time for Colorado Boy’ believed that the weather conditions, especially the ice and snow, might have had a hand in the reported clash. Fans were thankful that McClain did not end up with any major injuries. Even though the car crash ended well for the CB, his period at Colorado is far from it.
Why is McClain on the bench?

The freshman CB’s first year of college career didn’t quite go as planned. The number 1 HS cornerback was expected to thrive under Deion Sanders. But Sanders had different plans for him. The saga started back when Jackson State transfer two-way star Travis Hunter suffered a lacerated liver after enduring a late hit from Colorado State defensive back Henry Black at the star-studded Rocky Mountain showdown. It was the best chance McClain could have had to commence his journey in a black and gold uniform.
However, when Deion Sanders was inquired about it during a press conference, he surprisingly announced, “No. McClain isn’t ready. The plan at the corner is corner by committee. This is why we practice. We’re going to see who steps up and who takes over that role.”

Sanders also felt that the CB was “holding himself back” and that he needed to “Study, prepare, be on time for meetings, show up to the darn meetings.” The list of grievances from McClain was long back then. However, since then, the CB has put on some weight, expecting a good opportunity to come his way this season.
