Is Deion Sanders' aggressive recruitment enough to save the Colorado Buffaloes from their critical position woes?

Deion Sanders chose to become aggressive this time, both with his strategies and recruitment drive. But there still seem to be some loopholes in the scouting bonanza. At least DNVR Sports podcast host RK feels so. Why?

It’s the tight-end position, and Deion’s confidence in experienced guys has yet to prove themselves. This year, the tight-end class includes names such as Sam Hart and Sav’ell Smalls. Crucial positions demand experience. But he dances to his own tune. So, coaches treat the Colorado Buffaloes HC a “little different” while recruiting.

The Buffs HC made the ultimate use of the offseason overhaul. Driven by the goal to flip the 4-8 narrative, Deion also revamped his recruiting strategy. Back in February this year, Coach Prime came off as too ambitious when he declared, “I startеd outsidе in. I built it diffеrеnt bеcausе my attractability wеrе for thе skill playеrs. Now, wе wеnt to insidе out.” This year, the tight end room in Boulder underwent some significant changes.

For instance, tight ends were overshadowed in the ex-offensive coordinator Sean Lewis’s scheme, but that will not be the case under the new coach, Pat Shurmur. Hence, they just didn’t count on converted receiver Michael Harrison, who did a good job catching passes from the tight end spot last year. As Jake Schwanitz pointed out how a formidable tight end group looks, “I think tight end were actually okay…with Sam Hart, with Sav’ell Smalls and Morgan Pearson is your top three. It’s a very athletic group, especially with the two guys who are changing positions and then you’re getting a very proven guy or maybe not proven but experienced guy in Sam Hart.”

But his co-host, RK, is somehow unconvinced about Deion’s risky attempt to count on starters for something as crucial as the tight end position. “I don’t know, tight end is one of the hardest positions to learn it is, and so counting on two guys who are just starting their careers at that position, uh, at this level at least, is concerning to me,” highlighted RK. But the Buffs HC has made peace with the fact that how some people treat him ‘differently’ for his impulsive choices.

Deion Sanders stands out in the game of recruiting

All that Deion does is stand out from the crowd. In the recruiting game, he also ensures that he follows that. This treatment led Coach Prime to share his thoughts on On3’s podcast with Phillip Dukes. “They come at me different. My playing field ain’t as level as everybody else. They treat me a little different, so I’ve got to be one step ahead of them,” revealed the pumped-up Buffs HC.

Is Deion Sanders' aggressive recruitment enough to save the Colorado Buffaloes from their critical position woes?

Have an interesting take?

Unlike other college football coaches like the great Jim Harbaugh and Nick Saban, Coach Prime never walked on the path of going for school visits. According to the reports put forward by Brent Schrotenboer, between December 2022 and March 2024, Sanders had made no off-campus recruiting visits to high school or the recruits’ homes.

But that didn’t stop Deion Sanders from bringing home some of the best. The Buffs HC is proud of this, as he stated, “To you all that say we only go into the portal, we signed 17 high school players last year, and 13 played.” Coach Prime’s tight-end choices are less likely to miss the mark in that case.
