The NCAA transfer rules have undergone significant changes in recent months. There are now two schools of thought- one that wishes to grant further freedom to student-athletes by allowing them to transfer multiple times. That too without any penalties and no boundaries.

For Colorado, this move is supported by their attorney general Phil Weiser. Now this is strongly opposed by the college’s athletic director who believes that this distracts the players from getting an education. Rick George, the current athletic director (AD) for Colorado has now come forward to deny the freedom of transfers to its students. He now takes on the NCAA head-on to secure a brighter future for his college athletes.

On the surface level, Rick George and Deion Sanders are quite similar to each other. Both of them aren’t afraid to speak their mind and share their unhinged views. Now, Rick George has spoken up on the transfer rule changes that came back in 2021. He said- “I think we’re forgetting about the fact that education is primary.” George stressed the importance of education and to accommodate sports afterward.

“Ninety-five to 98% of these student-athletes are not going pro in their sport, so that degree and that education is extremely important. And when you transfer multiple times, are you going to have the progress towards degree credits, or have enough credits at an institution to get a degree? That’s concerning.” George further added that he highlighted that regular transfers can hamper the degree credits. The rule in discussion came way back in 2021 giving more flexibility to college players.

Rick George’s outcry at the NCAA and ensuring that his students prioritize education is due to an NCAA rule change that was introduced three years ago. As per the rule, undergraduate student-athletes across all sports could transfer once without having to sit out of the competition. This rule change saw a massive increase in football players entering into the transfer portal.

While Rick George stands firm with his decision, Colorado’s attorney general wants even more transfers to the players. Earlier this month, Weiser and other attorney generals from as many as six states sued the NCAA for its strict transfer rules. They want to allow the players to transfer as many times as they want without needing a waiver.
