In a surprising move, Coach Prime’s 5-star edge rusher, Sav’ell Smalls has announced a significant adjustment to his future in Colorado. He has eventually decided to transition to the tight-end position right from the beginning of the next season. Highly touted in the 2020 recruiting class, the 6-foot-3, 26-pound Washington transfer aims to redefine team dynamics. With this he has decided to pivot from terrorizing quarterbacks on defensive lines, to strengthen his ground on the offensive side as a tight end.

Having featured in only four games for the Buffaloes with two total tackles, Smalls encountered limited opportunities in Charles Kelly’s defensive line last year. Along with this, during the discussion by DNVR Sports, RK and Jake along with Uncle Neely, Small’s prowess in both lines has been highlighted, “I know he went through some injuries last year and some injuries at Washington, but a five-star player played both ways in high school. He’s an incredible athlete.”

Known for his prowess as a two-way star at Kennedy Catholic in Washington, Smalls possessed the title of MaxPreps All-American before stepping into collegiate football. As Smalls takes up the new role as a tight end, his aim is to align more naturally with the Buffs’ offensive strategy. After the departure of tight-end Michael Harrison, Smalls grabbed the opportunity to contribute wherever his skills are best utilized.

Till now Harrison has amassed 31 receptions for 284 yards and five touchdowns. Still, he too faced certain challenges in terms of his stature as highlighted by Uncle Neely, “We had a walk-on wide receiver last year and Michael Harrison who did some phenomenal things.  smaller body smaller frame so he really wasn’t a blocking tight end and when you looked at the deficiency we had at the offensive line having a tight end that was not known or capable of blocking only made that worse”. Hence, with his size and athleticism, Uncle Neely is confident about that Smalls is poised to become a key asset in Pat Shurmur’s offense.

In an attempt to substantiate his point, he sheds light on the role of coaches in bringing out the best among players through transitions, Uncle Neely draws parallels with James Houston. It is interesting to note that, when Houston transferred from the University of Florida to Jackson State, he was a linebacker. It was on Deion Sanders’ insistence that the player switched positions that led him to success.
