Is Coach Prime relying too much on Shedeur and Hunter? Can CU succeed without them?

Potential No.1 Draft pick? Maybe. Heisman Contender? Yes. One-man army? Hell no. The biggest mistake the Buffs made last season was assuming that Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter were more than enough to carry the team to a season victory. Both players, talented in their way, cannot do it all. And on 19th July on The Coach JB and Big Smitty Show, Colorado alum Matt McChesney gives the exact advice that Deion Sanders would need.

Amidst the major criticism Paul Finebaum issued regarding the Buffs and Coach Prime, there is no doubt that Deion and his team have a lot to prove this season. Matt McChesney went on to elaborate on how the team and Coach Prime can ensure that they tap into the potential that Shedeur and Travis have. “When Shedeur and Travis Hunter and Horn don’t have to do fu**ing everything every week in order to win. And if they’re off, or they’re sacked, or we can’t walk anybody, or we can’t run the ball, we’re screwed. But when he(Shedeur Sanders) doesn’t have to do everything It will allow him to literally do anything on the field,” Matt said. It all boils down to the fact that although both Shedeur and Travis are brilliant players, they will get pushed aside if they do not get the proper O-line or defense.

Both guys did more than enough last season. Shedeur got in that amazing 43-yard pass against Arizona, which got them the 27-24 win. And Hunter rocked it against TCU with a solid performance on both defense and offense, with a notable interception to stop TCU’s scoring dive. Matt McChesney ain’t wrong. “Give these skilled players a little bit of time and support by running the football and then defensively being able to get off the field every now and then. How do you lose with a first-round quarterback and the best player in college football?” This is the exact thing that Deion has to keep in mind for the 2024 season. Both Shedeur and Hunter need that backing; without it, we will all see a repeat of 2023. So, has Coach Prime learned from his past mistakes?

“We got to protect that quarterback,” is what Deion Sanders realized after the 2023 season was over. And it looks like the team has finally made some major changes. With the early transfer window for CU, Coach Prime got the nation’s ranked offensive lineman Jordan Seaton, and 6 other offensive linemen on the team. That is not all. Tyler Johnson from Houston and Justin Mayers from UTEP were brought in to ensure that Shedeur Sanders is kept safe while he is in the pocket.

Have an interesting take?

On the defensive end, Deion has ensured that Trevor Woods, freshman Kyeran Garcia, and LaVonta Bentley are all set and ready. The risks are up this season, running hot on the trails of Finebaum’s “They are irrelevant” comment. Deion Sanders has to prove that the Buffs ain’t a lost cause. More so because this might be the last season he gets to play around with his sons, Shedeur and Shilo Sanders. The 2024 season is almost here. Now, only time will tell if the Buffs get the last laugh or not.
