While Coach Prime’s recruiting strategy is widely known, his son is now taking the initiative. Colorado Buffaloes’ quarterback Shedeur Sanders has been discreetly reaching out to potential recruits to bolster the Buffs’ roster. Following Nick Saban’s retirement, Alabama faced a period of uncertainty. Capitalizing on this, Shedeur strategically used his social media platform to lure Alabama players to consider a move west to Colorado. This move caught some attention and didn’t seem like a onetime attempt.

Shedeur recently secured a commitment from one of the top veteran receivers in the AAC. By recruiting the talented wide receiver, he’s actively contributing to the Buffs’ development alongside his father’s coaching efforts. In a way, he is also ensuring a solid receiving corps for the upcoming Spring Game.

While discussing the Buffs with Brian Howell, beat reporter Jake Schwantiz highlighted LaJohntay Wester as the most impactful offensive transfer. “Starting offensively, I think I got to go with LaJohntay Wester. Just how Shedeur recruited him to Boulder recruited him to Boulder in the off-season that stood out to me,” he said. This isn’t surprising, as Shedeur himself was once favored by FAU in 2020, so a connection existed. Jake added, “LaJohntay had already played a season there so I think there were plans for them to kind of link up at some point. He entered the portal and Shedeur obviously made his case known and stated that he really wanted LaJohntay in Boulder. Now they finally get to play together.” He further said, “I just think that he’s [LaJohntay] so explosive out of the slot. I think he could be a big play threat from anywhere on the field.”

Wester, a transfer from Florida Atlantic University and their all-time reception leader, entered the transfer portal in December, prompting Shedeur’s active recruitment. Despite a strong receiving team already in place, Shedeur sees Wester’s potential to enhance the Buffaloes’ performance.

Wester’s arrival bolsters the Colorado Buffs

LaJohntay Wester isn’t just another addition to the Colorado Buffaloes. The FAU wide receiver brings a proven track record, earning 2023 FWAA All-American honors as a punt returner. His impressive stats showcase his talent — 108 receptions for 1,168 yards and a four-year total of 252 catches, 2,703 yards, and just 21 touchdowns. Wester will likely fill the gap left by Xavier Weaver’s departure to the NFL and bolster the already strong receiving corps.

The Buffs also struggled with poor punt returns in 2023, averaging a meager 10.4 yards per attempt. However, things are expected to change in 2024 with the arrival of LaJohntay Wester. Shedeur Sanders, the Buffs’ quarterback, recognizes Wester’s talent as a punt returner and is likely excited about having a reliable player in that role. His move should strengthen the Buffs’ offense. Thus, it seems like Coach Prime will continue his record-breaking journey alongside this exciting new weapon.
