Coach Prime faces a significant loss on offense with the departure of his new offensive lineman, Ethan Boyd. Adding to the shock, Boyd is rumored to have announced his retirement!
The latest reports reveal the Buffs will head into fall camp with one less offensive lineman. And yes, it’s Ethan Boyd! Boyd, who transferred from Michigan State, played in all 12 games last season as a redshirt sophomore, making 3 starts for Michigan. However, as a redshirt junior transfer, he hasn’t played for Colorado since joining only this spring. Now, he won’t be a part of their training camp, which is a real shocker.
This was first reported by Buffs’ beat writer Brian Howell on X, stating, “Colorado opening camp on Monday with 109 players on the roster, including 77 scholarship players. One expected transfer who won’t be joining the team is Ethan Boyd (OL, Michigan State).” Soon, a curious X user asked why Boyd was absent, and Howell responded with another surprising update: “I was told he decided to retire from football.”

While Buffs fans are left scratching their heads over this news, Boyd himself has not officially confirmed or explained it. He was on scholarship and had two years of eligibility, making this decision entirely unexpected.

While Boyd won’t get to shine in the Black and Gold uniform, the Buffs fortunately have plenty of depth and experience on the line this year. Deion is already hyping up the training camp, motivating the locker room despite this loss. “We don’t have the next day or next year. We have now,” he says, pushing his remaining players forward. However, losing the massive OL is likely a hit to Coach Prime’s 339-pound strategy!

Last year, the Colorado Buffaloes had a rough time protecting their quarterback, Shedeur Sanders. He got sacked a whopping 52 times! Coach Prime was unhappy, so he beefed up the offensive line and brought in a bunch of huge guys to protect his son. In his revamped strategy, Deion brought in 5 new OLs who average 339 pounds and are 6’5 ¾” tall. Ethan Boyd was one such “massive” addition. He’s a big guy, standing at 6’7″ and weighing 325 pounds.

Now, losing him reduces this average and deals a blow to the plan of protecting Shedeur. However, Coach Prime’s offensive investment ensures the setback isn’t significant, as the remaining players seem ready to handle the job. It’s believed that OL Jordan Seaton will be Shedeur’s left tackle, and OT Kahlil Benson will do everything in his power to ensure “No.2 is not touched.” We also have other massive OLs, like Peyton Kirkland and Zack Owens, too.
With such a well-planned team, the Buffs will achieve more than just four wins this time!
