Oh-ho, bad news for Georgia Bulldogs fans! In the 2024 season, Kirby Smart’s squad was rooting for quarterback Carson Beck to hit it big in the Heisman race. But it turns out to be that Beck’s fate would not favor this time. While the Bulldogs’ QB’s Heisman odds have hit a nosedive, Kansas State QB Avery Johnson emerges as a big hit in terms of rising Heisman odds. Why wouldn’t he? After all, a Kansas State assistant sees the qualities of a current NFL starting QB in Johnson. As Beck is dethroned from the top spot, Kansas State quarterback Johnson is now hailed as the Heisman favorite. He now stands at +2500 odds, sharing the same rank with Conner Weigman from Texas A&M, while Deion’s favorites Hunter and Shedeur fail to earn a spot. Now the player moving forward with towering hopes is Oregon State Beavers Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei with +2850 odds. But what makes Johnson so special?

It’s his similarity with the Green Bay Packers starting QB, Jordan Love. In an interview with The Athletic, Kansas State coach Matt Wells shared his take on Johnson, “Avery’s got elite speed and is uber-talented. He’s accurate and has great anticipation. The biggest parallel that I see is their hunger to be great at an early age. Jordan had that at Utah State.” While the reason behind the Kansas State QB taking up Beck’s place is clear, what went wrong for the Georgia QB?

Beck’s stellar stats meet a harsh reality check

Beck has spent most of this offseason savoring the limelight. Whether it be landing first in the 2025 NFL Draft or being tabbed as the best quarterback in college football, the Georgia quarterback’s journey has been a bed of roses. But not anymore, as the second half of 2024 has ushered in some interesting changes. Even though Beck displayed extraordinary talent with a 72.4% completion rate in his first year as a starter, the craze surrounding him has taken a dip.

It’s because, over the recent years, efficiency has not been compared to total production as far as Heisman’s contention is concerned. Moreover, the numbers Beck amassed cannot be credited to the QB himself. Instead, Smart’s program has too many weapons that give the QB the privilege to move forward safely with a balanced offense.

With that being said, the numbers that Beck has produced will soon be overshadowed now that his team is so dominant that would propel the QB to spend some time on the sideline watching his backup soar to success. Georgia’s luck last favored in 1982 when Herschel Walker grabbed the award. Time to see whether the odds are proved wrong and Beck succeeds in breaking the four-decade dry spell.
