The NCAA’s troubles with the NIL lawsuit will hopefully get better with Caleb Williams‘ recent statement. This case has been the league’s nightmare for quite some time now. In a new petition to the US Court of Appeals, the NCAA has now been warned that losing the lawsuit could force the organization to pay over $4 billion in damages.
But it seems as if Caleb Williams will come to the aid of the NCAA as they desperately try to win the case. Williams is currently the fifth-highest NIL-earner in college athletics with a $2.7 million evaluation. So his supporting the NCAA in a case against NIL is really head-scratching.

Twin brothers Matthew Bewley and Ryan Bewley are seeking damages and an injunction that would clear them to play for the Cougars. They were both five-star recruits in 2023, when they elected to join OTE. After spending two seasons there, they were committed to joining Chicago State for the 2023-24 season.
However, their plans got foiled when the NCAA denied their eligibility for “receiving money generated from their name, image and likeness while competing for Overtime Elite Academy.” Their lawsuit argues that the NCAA’s actions don’t agree with prior decisions involving the organization’s NIL policy. On this matter, Caleb Williams took a stand supporting the the NCAA.
The quarterback for the USC Trojans said, “It’s like if you go to school and you are a straight-A student and there’s another kid whose strong suit isn’t school and he gets B’s or B-minuses,” Williams told Yahoo Sports in August. “How fair would it be if you got the same grade as him? That never works in school and it doesn’t make sense. That’s how I look at that game with the situation with the $500.”

His remarks basically embolden the reason as to why an NIL-based lawsuit is problematic in itself. While he may be correct in a way, the Bewley twins have a point too.
