Is BJ Green setting a new standard for college athletes with his NIL success?

This 6-foot-1, 270-pound Buffs junior has quickly become known for his lofty and admirable work ethic and equally towering win-loss record. Indeed, BJ Green has come a long way to this point in his football career. He is a mechanical engineering student and has equally managed his class work with his passion for tackling football enthusiastically. Having featured mostly for McEachern High School and a little for Prince Avenue, he has continued the same dominance in college.

Despite being out of commission at the beginning of the season, Green’s return was nothing short of a triumph. He led the Wolverines to the state championship, amassing an impressive 73 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks—half of which turned the tide of the game. His time at high school was productive and proved his resilience, paving the way for his continued success at university.

Starting with a fresh redshirt year at Arizona State University, Green joined the team as a walk-on with a defensive lineman position and received the scholarship with a regular season game-breaking performance. He completed five sacks, thus making him the fourth true freshman in the program’s history with such a record. During the football seasons of 2023 and 2024, Green continues to increase his appeal as a player and a prominent figure in college football. Performances on the field have seen Green being approached by various brands interested in association with him, thereby promoting his brand.

Some of the NIL arrangements that Green has gotten are a result of his efforts and passion for football. He is practical when it comes to these deals“I’m trying to set myself up for life after football.” Green aims to have a good retirement plan, and he can achieve that; all he has to do is keep getting better. NIL deals have offered Green a chance to cash in his skills, and the better he gets, the better NIL deals he bags.

Green reportedly signed a NIL deal with Gatorade. Green’s multi-faceted partnership with Gatorade involves promotional work and community outreach. This means that Green shall be featured in several brand advertisement campaigns and mobilize for and engage in local events and marketing stunts. These NIL deals may bring money with them, but at the same time, these deals can destroy a player because they can also be a distraction. Green is strong-minded, though. “I’m just trying to build my brand and be the best version of myself,” Green said.

Green has also signed a deal with Opendorse, making his NIL valuation $222,000. This includes autographs, shout-outs, social posts, and more. BJ Green may be young, but it can already be seen that he is one of the most astute businessmen and physically gifted football players in the college football circuit today. It will be exciting to follow how Green and other stars of top sports disciplines will realize responsible advertising within the framework of NIL and create their image profiles.
