Amid the controversy surrounding the NCAA not paying enough to football athletes, the organization has come up with a masterstroke to ensure that the players get paid. In the history of amateur sports, there’s no bigger unit than the NCAA. With its new proposal, their respective schools would pay the college athletes directly.

This is a revolutionary change coming in the NCAA division that always went by the rulebook of not involving any other body for payments. The proposal outlined by Charlie Baker would be to create a select list of schools that can operate under their own rules. However, there lies a catch here, with the schools obligated to pay more than half of their athletes $30,000 in some sort of trust funding. This could very well lead to a shakeup of things at the NCAA level and bring out even more changes.

The NCAA for a long time has held the at all levels of college games. Now, they made revised plans to include a certain list of schools that will directly pay their athletes. However, this creates some sort of polarization since certain colleges are bigger and more well-supported as compared to others.

Teams such as Minnesota Gophers, Houston Cougars, Temple Owls, and East Carolina Pirates won’t benefit from such a change since they don’t have big finances. However, the proposed plan is highly in favor of bigger teams that have significant monetary aspects.

For bigger and well-financed teams in the NCAA football division, there’s hardly an issue with paying their athletes. These sides include- Texas, Michigan, and several others. These schools can pay their players easily but the same can be said about smaller colleges.

The new sub-division within Division 1 will provide universities with more autonomy in terms of having monetary control. But the polarization in powers can be felt, which will ultimately lead to less competitive games. Financially stronger teams would be able to absorb decent players and make their sides stronger. The same can’t be said about the smaller teams.

The issues get more intense since the new rule also allows the colleges to customize the NIL deals. This would further increase the pay gap between the stronger and weaker sides.
