Caleb Williams is the hottest name in the 2024 NFL Draft, and the Chicago Bears seem all set to grab him with their #1 pick. His incredible talent is obvious, but now the hype is reaching new heights. Some analysts are calling Williams the best quarterback prospect in over a decade, comparing him to legends like Andrew Luck.

One host even went further, subtly suggesting that Williams might even have an edge over current superstar Patrick Mahomes. This bold comparison comes as many have already dubbed Williams “the next Mahomes.” It looks like the recent comparisons will only intensify the excitement surrounding his potential on Draft Day.

Sports personality Nick Wright made some waves during a recent appearance on the CHGO Bears Podcast. With the NFL Draft looming, he went all-out on his praise for top prospect Caleb Williams. “In my time watching, covering the NFL, he’s [Caleb] the best prospect since Luck. And I think he’s a better prospect than Luck,” Wright declared.  Not to forget, Andrew Luck dominated as the #1 quarterback prospect in 2012 and was drafted by the Colts back then.

Wright didn’t stop there. He compared Williams to 2021’s top pick, Trevor Lawrence, stating, “he’s a better prospect than both of them.”  Even everyone’s current favorite Patrick Mahomes wasn’t spared, with Wright subtly suggesting Williams has more potential.  “Obviously Mahomes has been in there…he was not a better prospect than Caleb Williams, and so that’s how I feel about it,” he said. All this praise is sure to make Caleb Williams even more sought-after in the draft. But it’s still too soon for such lofty comparisons.

Is Caleb the next Mahomes in the making?

Comparing Caleb Williams to Patrick Mahomes is tempting, but it might be premature given Mahomes’ incredible NFL success. Mahomes was a star in college, throwing for a massive 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns in just three seasons. But his college team relied heavily on passing plays, making him seem like a riskier pick for the NFL. Williams, on the other hand, has a more balanced skillset. He finished his college career with 10,082 passing yards, 966 rushing yards, and an impressive 120 touchdowns.

Like Mahomes, he’s known for his powerful arm and has thrown for over 4,500 yards in back-to-back seasons. Statistically, Mahomes and Williams are very similar which makes comparing them tempting. However, while Williams still has the potential to be an NFL legend, the Mahomes comparisons might be setting the bar too high. He still has time to develop and prove himself in his new NFL team. Regardless, Williams’ talent is undeniable, and his #1 draft spot seems secure for now.
