Nick Saban might have gotten over Alabama Crimson Tide, but the football program has yet to get over him. Yes, you read that right. The Crimson Tide’s new head coach, Kalen DeBoer, said in the latest press meeting that Jalen Milroe and the company will be free to share a word with their ex-coach, Saban.

It is more than surprising on DeBoer’s part since he is taking up Saban’s place. Instead of pushing the players to unlearn their ex-coach’s teachings, the new HC adheres to an open-minded strategy in the firm belief that amalgamation of the coaching maestro’s inputs with his will be a huge deal for Crimson Tide this season.

Mutual respect reigns supreme in DeBoer and Saban’s relationship

It has only been a few months since DeBoer replaced Saban. The new HC in no way denies the credit that Saban deserves for being the captain of the Crimson Tide boat so far. DeBoer has left a touch of Saban in the present roster. However, the connection will be mutual as while Jalen Milroe and his teammates are allowed to reach out to Saban, the former coach should not hesitate to walk through Alabama’s door. DeBoer assured, “I want to make sure that that connection is always there and that they always feel like they can reach out to the coach that recruited them… also that coach Saban knows he’s always got an open door.”

This has been possible only because of the bond DeBoer and Saban shared. Before giving up on his role, Saban offered him the coaching job. However, the two still differ in the coaching style that might propel Alabama toward trouble.

DeBoer’s legacy and vision come into play

DeBoer has a different style and approach than Saban. The new Alabama HC is inclined toward a lighter version of a practice that involves playing music and permits the assistant coaches to interact with the media. This has been a significant shift since Saban adhered to a strict “one-voice” policy. The next question is, will DeBoer propel the Crimson Tide to reach a double-digit win in 2024 by choosing a different path?

The first hurdle the new HC will have to overcome is the pressure of replacing a seven-time national champion coach who owns essentially every record in the book. However, DeBoer’s records hold high scope since he guided them to a 25-3 record in just two years with the Washington Huskies. Besides, it was under his tutelage that they got a national title berth this past season.

According to projections by Action Network, the chances of the Crimson Tide winning between 9-10 games in 2024 are high. This season will be an exciting ride for DeBoer’s program since 2024 marks the beginning of the expanded College Football Playoffs with 12 spots up as opposed to the four in the past.
