The Michigan Wolverines have met a roadblock in their coaching roster with their new DL coach suspended indefinitely after being arrested for driving under the influence. Following his OWI arrest, he sent his resignation notice to new HC Sherrone Moore who stated, “I just received notice that Greg Scruggs has resigned his position, effective immediately. I am unable to comment further as this is a University matter.”

38-year-old Moore is the first African American HC in Michigan and is just breaking into his new role. As their spring football practice kicked off, he admitted that his team loves the taste of winning the National Championship and isn’t going to stop at attempting another title. With that said Moore will have to find a replacement for Scruggs quickly to uphold the defense that ranked at the top in the nation in 2023.

Maize and Blue Review Journalist Trevor McCue recently posted on X about the whole Scruggs situation and Michigan’s plight in quickly finding a replacement. After wishing the best for Scruggs, he wrote, “Regarding the DL coach position, Michigan has options on staff with LaTroy Lewis, Kevin Wilkins, and Pernell McPhee. Moore could also revisit names like Terrance Jamison.”

Considering that they’re already settling into their spring practice that started on March 18, perhaps, it would be more beneficial for Moore to choose an internal staff hire. Let’s take a deeper look into these four potentials.

LaTroy Lewis – LB Assistant

Lewis is a former NFL linebacker who played in the pro league for two seasons before joining the XFL for one season. In 2022, he joined Michigan as a defensive graduate assistant who contributed to the coaching staff lineup in their 2023 National Championship title.

Kevin Wilkins – Defensive Analyst

Wilkins may be another potential candidate to take the DL coach position, given his working experience with Michigan staff including DC Wink Martindale while with the Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants as a defensive assistant. While he’s a recent hire this season, his nine years of defensive experience in the NFL is something that can’t be overlooked.

Pernell McPhee – Defensive Asst. coach

Former NFL linebacker McPhee is another recent hire by Moore to serve as the defensive assistant coach. Like Wilkins, he’s also a Ravens product who worked under Wink Martindale. With his 11 years of experience as an NFL linebacker, the Super Bowl champ is worth considering for the post.

Terrance Jamison – Illinois DL coach

This one may not be a Wolverines staff but he was reportedly second in line to securing the DL coach job in Michigan after Greg Scruggs. Jamison has 10 years of experience as a DL coach in five different schools and under his coaching, Illinois boasts one of the best defenses in the Big Ten.

Before even stepping into the regular season, several complications and challenges are thrown in Sherrone Moore’s face. But hopefully, he’ll triumph over it all and prove his abilities as a capable HC after Jim Harbaugh.
