Be it team sports or individual excellence, players often find it hard to keep a lid on their competitive emotions. Things get especially heated when two top rival trash—talkers collide on the field for the national championship. That’s how it went down between LSU and Iowa in the women’s basketball championship. However, LSU’s Angel Reese faced way more backlash for it than her Iowa competition. NFL legend Brandon Marshall gave his two cents on the subject.

And his two cents included some NFL comparisons and references featuring a couple of heavy names like Aaron Rodgers, Miami Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill, and Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson.

It was Clark who first brought out John Cena’s ‘You Can’t See Me’ celebration with her hand in front of her face against South Carolina in the Elite Eight this season. However, when Angel Reese avenged her SEC sisters by beating the Hawkeyes 102-85 in the title game and dished out the Cena taunt for Caitlin Clark, many in the sporting community termed her actions “classless” and crass.

All she did was do what Caitlin had already done before. And Brandon Marshall failed to see the reason behind the criticism of the Tigers forward.

A woman’s experience is different from any man’s experience. But if we turn on the games on Sunday, all we are trying to do is make fun of the next guy. So Tyreek Hill, if he’s playing Justin Jefferson, he’s gonna do the griddy. A cornerback shuts down Justin Jefferson, he’s gonna do the griddy. Someone’s playing against Aaron Rodgers, they’re gonna throw the discount double-check. But in your sport, it’s totally different,” 6x Pro Bowler Marshall said.

All publicity is good publicity

Rebound Reese and 3-pointer specialist Clark’s waited matchup entered the history books in viewership numbers. The game became the most-viewed NCAA women’s basketball final, with an average viewership of 9.9 million. The peak reached around 12.6 million viewers, doubling the overall numbers from last year. And this would not have been possible if not for the trash-talking and on-field rivalry between the two future superstars. Also, the LSU-Iowa game became the most-watched college event ever, including men’s events, on ESPN+.

The headlines brought even more attention. After fighting Caitlin and her haters, Angel took on the First Lady, Jill Biden this week after she invited Iowa to join LSU in their White House visit. However, Marshall thinks no press is bad press. “I truly believe that this is a defining moment. The good and the bad are going to help push the game forward,” he said.

Surely, fans can expect another thriller between Angel and Caitlin next year. And in the unlikely scenario that the two don’t meet next year, they’re always the years of WNBA rivalry lying ahead for the future.
