The Michigan fans might just see their favorite quarterback sitting behind the number 1 spot at the NFL Draft 2024. They are the current reigning champions after winning the national championship last season. Now that the leading force behind their wins is in talks to be at a second overall pick, how will the Wolverines cope with it?
Under Jim Harbaugh’s guidance, the Wolverines had a dominating run this season. They went 15-0 before finally winning the national championship against the Washington Huskies. But even with the trophy in their hand, it looks like Washington will have the last laugh as their quarterback seems to rank higher than Michigan’s JJ McCarthy. Here’s Jack Sperry and his thoughts on why McCarthy should be below Washington’s Drake Maye in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft.

On the latest episode of the Commanders Report by Chat Sports, host Jack Sperry was seen talking about the number 1 draft prospects and only two names came to his mind- JJ McCarthy and Drake Maye. While McCarthy has had an unbelievable season no doubt, Sperry believes that he should rank lower than Maye in the 2024 Draft.
He said, “I’m not sure if he’s ready necessarily for a progression-style offense in the National Football League at least in year one. Also, he is a bit skinny. He is 6’3 but he is close to 200 pounds which isn’t exactly ideal and in terms of size for an NFL quarterback. Now he’s still young, he could still fill out but in terms of a first-year prospect, not sure if he’s got the size that you’re looking for like say a Drake Maye has and then the favorable surroundings.” Thus, even with a championship trophy on his shoulders, it looks like McCarthy still has a lot to work towards to navigate his career in the NFL. While most believe that McCarthy isn’t NFL-ready yet, here’s what Joel Klatt had to say about the Michigan quarterback’s future.
Joel Klatt talks about JJ McCarthy being more ready than ever for the upcoming NFL Draft of 2024
McCarthy was a pivotal part of the Michigan team in 2023 and played a major role in leading the team to 15 consecutive wins. And if that wasn’t enough, he gave it his all by winning the CFP championship for the Wolverines as well. But then what is with most of the football community doubting his athletic prowess? Fox Sports’ sports analyst Joel Klatt expresses his views on the situation.

Klatt was heard saying, “J.J., he’s more NFL-ready than you think. I like J.J. McCarthy to the Seahawks. Gosh, that would be great. The draft would be on fire in Detroit. ” Klatt further went on to say, “He’s not going to get selected in the top three picks, I don’t think at least … Which means he’s going to fall to some team or organization that is much more sound and has a much better roster that’s going to work to his benefit. Good chance he lands with a team that is not terrible. That is not bad. And that makes for a better situation for a young quarterback.” The 21-year-old is one of the top prospects at the Draft this year and it will be interesting to see what team he ends up choosing.
