Change is coming! Jedd Fisch is rounding up his coaching staff as part of a series of changes after replacing Kalen DeBoer as Washington HC. The decision to bring Steve Belichick on board is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the team’s defensive strategies and tactics.

Bill Belichick left the New England Patriots in January after 23 seasons. As per ESPN, Steve Belichick and his brother Brian would have been granted the opportunity to remain as part of the coaching staff under new HC Jerod Mayo. But unlike his brother who is presently the Patriots safety coach, Steve Belichick is calling his own shots.

According to latest reports, he is reportedly bringing former Patriots defensive play caller Steve Belichick to become the new Huskies DC. Interestingly, this news isn’t much of a shocker considering the current Washington HC and the younger Belichick worked together for one season at New England.

The 36-year-old has served as a coaching member at New England since 2012. He was the OL coach beginning from 2020 which was the year when he worked along with Jedd Fisch who was the then Patriots QB coach for one season. Fisch left to become the Arizona HC later that same year until he moved to Washington as the HC this season.

Is Steve Belichick the right person to coach Washington defense?

During his tenure with the Patriots, the team’s defense has performed impressively. For each of the last three seasons, the Patriots boasted a top-10 defensive DVOA. The team’s defense wrapped up at No. 7 in total yardage allowed in the NFL. Now that Washington is moving into the Big Ten, the program needs to hone their defense records up from No. 60 and No. 99 over the last two seasons.

Steve Belichick may have an awesome track record under his belt, including three Super Bowl victories. But past performances usually don’t guarantee future success. It’s going to be an interesting scenario as this will be his first time coaching players at the collegiate level. With Fisch wanting to run the Huskies in the likes of running the NFL, Belichick is going to be a great addition for Washington’s coaching roster.
