Sherrone Moore defends JJ McCarthy left and right and the NFL Combine seems like the right place for it. The 21-year-old is entering the 2024 NFL Draft as one of the best QBs coming from Michigan, completing 72.3 percent of his passes with 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns in 15 games. With Sherrone Moore on the sidelines for the games that Jim Harbaugh missed due to two separate three-game suspensions, he led the Wolverines to the National Championship.

As much as Sherrone Moore believes in JJ McCarthy, the 6’3 QB also has equal trust and respect for his former assistant, who became the new Michigan HC. He believes that the Wolverines are in good hands under Moore’s leadership. See how the two Michigan cornerstones have each other’s backs both in times of success and despair.

Former Michigan star JJ McCarthy’s speech at the NFL Combine put Sherrone Moore on a pedestal. This is what he said of the new Wolverines HC, “The most important quality of a head coach at the University of Michigan is being a Michigan man and he’s earned his stripes. The boys love him, they’re behind him. And with those two things, they’re going to be successful no matter what.”

Following this, Sherrone Moore couldn’t hold back his admiration for the young QB who is about to leap to the professional level. He said of JJ McCarthy, “You put in the film of JJ McCarthy, and you just see a winner… He’s the ultimate team guy. He’s special.” His statement comes in defense of his former QB, who became a subject of criticism from naysayers that stems from doubts about his throws.

Sherrone Moore silences JJ McCarthy’s critics

Critics are never-ending and even a star QB like JJ McCarthy isn’t spared from judgment. Despite winning 27-1 as a starter with three Big Ten titles and a National Championship, critics still feel they haven’t seen the best of McCarthy through the air. Last season, Michigan ran the football for about 60 percent, thereby not giving much chance for their QB to throw it. So his stats are comparatively lower than those of other QBs entering the NFL Draft.

But Sherrone Moore knows JJ McCarthy better than his critics and lauds him as a potential first-round pick. He said of McCarthy, “He can make any type of throw. Anything you want, JJ can do. He can run the football if he wanted to… He has that ‘it-factor’ that you want in a quarterback. He has that.” Sooner or later, J.J. McCarthy will get a chance to prove himself but until then, all we can do is speculate.
