Michigan is yet to find someone who can lead their defense. With their former DC leaving with Jim Harbaugh to LA, Sherrone Moore is tasked with finding an equally competitive replacement. And he seems to be following in the program’s previous HC’s footsteps to bring an NFL coach to Michigan.

Michigan’s defense thrived under their former two DCs namely Mike Macdonald and Jesse Minter, both of whom were brought from the NFL by Harbaugh. With the latest reports swirling around, it’s possible that Moore could bring the Kansas City Chiefs DL coach to Ann Arbor. But, it’s easier said than done because Michigan isn’t the only football team seeking a DC.

As per the latest reports on the Locked On Wolverines podcast, Sherrone Moore is looking to build up Michigan’s defense with help from NFL coach Joe Cullen. The 56-year-old Massachusetts native is presently the DL coach of the 2024 Super Bowl contender. The Wolverines could potentially sign Cullen as their new DC.

Joe Cullen may have had a past that he might have wished he could erase. But as the Michigan alum host said, “He ended salvaging his career, rebounding, and thriving. Hence he’s the DL coach for a Super Bowl team.” And while it may seem like there are no complications, Moore and Michigan aren’t the only ones seeking Joe Cullen’s service. According to sources, two NFL teams are also eyeing him as a DC prospect, namely the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders.

What could be Joe Cullen’s final destination?

Joe Cullen is a veteran in the NFL with more than 17 years of experience and presently coaching one of the best defensive lines in football. Cullen worked under John Harbaugh from 2016-20 as the DL coach for the Baltimore Ravens. His only DC experience in the NFL came from his sole season with Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 where the team saw an improvement in the sack numbers from 18 to 32. Since 2022, he has served as the DL coach for the Chiefs who went on to rank 2nd in yards and points allowed.

Aside from the NFL, Cullen also has experience with college football coaching with programs like Illinois, LSU, Idaho State, Richmond, and Indiana as both DL coach and DC. So, the question remains whether Joe Cullen will keep the NFL aside and lead the reigning National Champions in college football to another potentially successful season in 2024.
