Jim Harbaugh left college football to retry his luck at winning a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Chargers. With him taking Michigan’s key coaching staff like Ben Herbert and Jesse Minter to the pro league, new HC Sherrone Moore was tasked with finding able replacements. His recent GM acquisition is none other than Sean Magee who is not an unfamiliar face in Michigan.

Sean Magee played a dominant role under Jim Harbaugh’s run in Michigan. He joined the Wolverines in 2017 as the Director of Player Personnel and helped Harbaugh recruit strength coach Ben Herbert despite the HC’s reluctance. In his final four seasons at Michigan, he was promoted to Associate Athletic Director before leaving for the NFL in 2022 as Chief of Staff for the Chicago Bears. His return to Michigan sparked a homely welcome from Sherrone Moore.

Michigan Football recently posted on X welcoming their previous associate AD who will now serve as their new GM. The post read, “Welcome back to Michigan, Sean!” New HC Moore echoed the post and welcomed him back after stealing him from a potential Oklahoma Sooners job. He wrote, “Yes sir! Welcome home!!!

According to reports, Sean Magee was a favorite to get hired by Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione last October before the “signgate” scandal broke out. This put his offer on hold while the Oklahoma athletic department investigated the matter to see if he was involved. But when they came back with an offer, it was too late because Sherrone Moore already had him with the prestigious GM role in Michigan where he would be able to work alongside his old colleague who is also transitioning from OC to HC. So, how is Sean Magee’s new role going to benefit Michigan’s NIL era?

Sean Magee’s role in boosting Michigan’s NIL scenario

Michigan may be one of the first programs to pass the NIL legislation but they haven’t been able to profit much from it, but it might change with Magee’s return. A source said, “Sean coming back is a great deal for donors and NIL.” Among other responsibilities, “Magee will oversee all aspects of the recruiting and player personnel departments as well as coordinate the program’s NIL initiatives” as per Michigan’s press release.

Sean Magee’s role is to lead all the activities attributed to NIL per the Michigan Athletic Department’s interest. In addition to serving as Football’s NIL representative, he’ll also take care of NIL resources while connecting with NIL partners. Magee’s history with Jim Harbaugh in Michigan, his experience in the NFL with the Bears, and his talent evaluation ability make him a good candidate for a general manager who will potentially raise the NIL hype in Michigan.
